I wish this were the case at all AutoZone, but alas it is the exception rather than the norm. I myself turn down a position of store manager, cuz I cannot represent a company whose values are not current with the times.
Not only are minorities and non English speakers and non-cisgendered people denigrated, but AutoZone as a company has a particular political ideology that it insists all of its managers embrace or at least go along with. It is very narrow, and it is not inclusive.
I love that AutoZone hires the best qualified person for the job and provides opportunities for all employees to strive and grow! AutoZone genuinely cares about all employees!!!

In a world where biases often overshadow merit, many talented individuals and innovative ideas are overlooked. We tend to favor those who already possess success, perpetuating a cycle of inequality. It's time to break free from these preconceived notions and recognize the potential that lies beyond our immediate perceptions. Cord Jefferson states this so well.
Imagine a world where we give everyone a chance, regardless of their background, appearance, or social status. Imagine the groundbreaking ideas that would emerge, the untapped talents that would be unleashed, and the positive impact it would have on society as a whole.
Let's challenge ourselves to look beyond the obvious and embrace diversity. Let's give people a platform to showcase their abilities, even if they don't fit our preconceived notions of success. By doing so, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities and create a more just and equitable society for all.
As the saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover." Let's give people a chance to prove their worth, and we might just be surprised by what they can achieve.

Equality and equity are crucial for social justice, and that's what makes DIEB (Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging) so essential. Unfortunately, some influential figures, such as Elon Musk and DeSantis, seem to be ignoring these fundamental values, hoping to erase them from the conversation. However, history shows that the same patterns of inequality persist today. It's up to us to address these issues and work towards a more equitable future. Let's keep fighting for a world where everyone has a fair chance to succeed, regardless of their background. #Diversity#Inclusion#Equity#Belonging#SocialJustice#mlk#martinlutherkingjr

If you had to articulate your purpose and all your ideas in 4 minutes, could you? Where would you start?
This was the challenge put to us Thursday morning. AXA and AXA XL hosted a ‘hustings’ at their offices. A hustings is an opportunity for candidates to tell their story and ambitions for the community. It’s a fantastic way to ensure that all candidates have a voice and creates a fairness that is very valued through these elections.
Coffee. Croissants. Then it was time. Rows of chairs. Nine (!) candidates folding into the first two rows. Electors filling the rest of the room. A fantastic welcome and introduction to the electoral process. Then it was our turn. I was 8th. Talk about pressure! Squeezing 20 pages of content into 1 page. Picking only 3 ideas from 100s. At full cantor, I’d get it in just 3:55.
My turn. Standing in the front of the room, I took a breath. All the work I’d done over the last year crashing into 4 minutes. As an introvert, I knew this was the moment where a lifetime of practice getting up in front of teams, audiences, auditoriums would be tested. Breathe. Control the energy. Root in your purpose. Find your voice.
And it was easier this time than usual. Why? Because more than any other presentation I’ve done before, I could be myself. I could be true to my purpose. Be controversial. Be funny. Be memorable. Be thoughtful.
Be helpful. Be me.
Thanks for the encouragement to make a video to share it further. Listen for the points where I spark debate and bring a different view on our community. Perspectives others don’t understand about us. Enjoy!
Thank you Charlotte Cuenot, Alison Thompson, Mark Pain and Mark Gettleson for hosting us. Listen for iCAN: The Insurance Cultural Awareness Network, GAIN (Group for Autism, Insurance, Investment & Neurodiversity), Link: LGBTQ+ Insurance Network. Our shared values.

Here is another argument for prioritizing inclusion in the workplace. Creating inclusive organizations will lead to organizations that are more diverse, more equitable and more profitable.
Most companies know what diversity looks like — but what about equity and inclusion? Here’s why social entrepreneur Paolo Gaudiano says focusing on all 3 parts of DEI — not just the first one — is the key to getting it right:

No. You can’t. And we won’t drive it either. So how is the car going to get serviced then. Don’t know. But we have rules.
A cleaned up version of a conversation a few years ago when I took my heavily adapted car to get a service. Only to hit an impasse about how it would get up the ramp. The irony being the same dealership ten miles down the road had taken the pragmatic approach. You need to drive it in and out but here are our strict guidelines that we all need to comply with. I had only decided to switch to my local one for convenience. It became the opposite. So I switched back.
Earlier this week I contributed to a Leadership Development Programme for Lithia & Driveway. A new company emerging from a marriage between two large car dealerships. Or should I say automotive retailers. One of those is an existing Purple Tuesday Partner. Joy to be told we had already had a measurable impact. Sales in their Motability scheme had gone up significantly.
Disability is a huge opportunity for the automotive industry. Motability is the single biggest car fleet in the UK. And not all disabled people and their families buy through Motability. But all expect to receive a good customer experience.
Don’t quote me but the number of times a disabled person visits a dealership before purchase has gone down significantly over the last few years. Due diligence is done online. As for all. But if information is tucked into an inaccessible microsite within an inaccessible main site then disabled people will look elsewhere. If you are doing great things then tell people. Marketing to disabled people is an investment. Don’t just expect us to know.
Slight panic before my presentation. The CEO had just said we are not a car business but a people business. I had recorded a video of my car and is spaceship adaptations as a way of engaging my audience. I am no #Clarkson, #Hammond or #May but if you are interested you can view it here: https://lnkd.in/eEbK-Njh
The Senior Leaders I met this week are very fortunate. They work for an impressive. Progressive organisation. Where inclusion is explicit in their Leadership Framework. Perhaps a light bulb moment for some. Disabled allies making a real difference to the lives of so many people. By doing what they do best. Selling. Delivering. Aftersales care. To all.
Will never win an Oscar Friday.

Money is closely connected to people and things 😉😉😉
When actions and tasks are efficiently executed, wealth naturally follows 🤩🤩🤩
However, we must understand that people are at the core of actions ☺️☺️☺️
By improving individual qualities, actions and tasks can proceed smoothly.
Within a team, whether in business or a community,
Each person has a different professional role and is unique.
Our only common ground is working together to drive the brand's long-term development 😎😎😎
Utilizing individual strengths to achieve brand goals,
Collaborating with a group of like-minded individuals,
Is more meaningful than solely pursuing wealth with narrow perspectives 😍😍😍

So, I’m currently developing a workshop aimed at helping individuals, teams, and organisations to have more productive, confident, and competent conversations about race and race equity. As we hopefully all seek to become anti-racist rather than non-racist it is so important that we not only start these conversations but stay in these conversations, no matter how uncomfortable and challenging they may feel.
Take a look at a video on the CIPD website by Aggie Mutuma , CEO of Mahogany Inclusion Partners, who wrote the CIPD guide ‘How to talk about race’. https://lnkd.in/gQ3rsaMq
There are a number of key elements that Aggie pinpoints as crucial in having a productive and considered conversation about race. Here’s a brief synopsis of just a few of those points.
Preparation
- Self-educate and do your research – this is critical. Please don’t assume that friends and colleagues of colour will lead any conversations about race and/or race equity. For many, the trauma, deep upset and pain of racism experienced across a lifetime may mean that talking more about it simply re-ignites those emotions. Let’s not be lazy and let’s all do our own research to ensure a level of understanding and appreciation before we start any conversation about race and racism. You might read and share articles, undertake relevant training, listen to podcasts, and watch webinars for example.
- Ensure you are using relevant language and terminology. Most importantly here is to ask and listen to colleagues and friends regarding the language and terminology they wish to hear used in a conversation or in a training session. Whilst we still often see and hear the BAME acronym being used, this really is not appropriate nor relevant anymore. I personally use the term Global Majority Heritage (GMH) in any training that I deliver. This was well received at a recent workshop I delivered with Birmingham City University however I made the point of asking if any colleagues of colour in the room would prefer me to use different terminology.
Finally, I would also like to add that it is incredibly important to understand why the conversation is taking place. What is the ‘So what?’ What action is going to take place following the conversation and who is going to ensure that the conversation (and all the challenges that are likely to come with it) moves forward and that change takes place? Action is critical otherwise is becomes just another conversation about race and racism.
Thank you, Aggie, and Mahogany Inclusion Partners, for the crucial work that you do.
