Over the past decade, small satellites have shaken up the space industry, changing things such as broadband and infrastructure monitoring on Earth. Around 2013, they became popular due to cheaper launches and a willingness to take more risks. In early 2023, smallsat investments slowed down a bit. Furthermore, the increasing number of smallsats in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) has made us more aware of objects in space. Space investment fell to a record low of $19 billion last year, down more than $30 billion from the peak in 2021 after a decade of boom.  Here is Via Satellite’s "Will Space Investment Rebound" article from interviews with me and other investors including Chad Anderson, Case Taylor, Matt O'Connell and Michael Mealling. Fundraising for space startups will likely remain challenging in 2024, but exceptional teams with great ideas will always get funded. Investors are more risk averse, and more demanding. Capital intensive science projects are out; Investors look for strong business plans with a clear path to revenue and profitability. While not every startup will make it, the winners will get stronger in this environment. We remain positive on the space economy long-term. Thousands of new satellites have been launched into orbit from a decade of investment; they are just starting to come online, bringing a wide range of new and game changing capabilities. In the #spaceeconomy, the biggest commodity we receive from space is #bigdata about Earth 🌎 from the thousands of satellites looking down at us. Yes, eventually, it might be SBSP, zblan, pharmaceuticals, or organs, but today it's data. And all that data from #satellites 🛰 occasionally hits bottlenecks and backups at ground stations 📡. This new former Disney child star 🌟 led startup Northwood Space (that's too new for a LinkedIn page...come on, I know some #LinkedIn #space people if you need help 😎😉) wants to solve that data bottleneck problem by mass producing ground stations ready to go. As the #spaceindustry continues to grow, it means more and more data trying to travel to and from satellites. With that in mind, Northwood's approach is to build ground stations "designed with fast production and deployment flexibility first in mind." That can be delivered within days. With experience playing a 2,000+yr old vampire who dated Galileo 🔭, I'm sure with Mendler at the helm, this one of the newest space #startups will find great future success in the #5ir -GSP- MilkyWayEconomy The Space Economy

We are delighted to announce our fifth investment from the fund in Auriga Space. Some of our LP’s invested directly via a SPV. Auriga Space was part of the latest cohort of companies out of the Seraphim Space Accelerator, the leading accelerator in SpaceTech based in London and the US.   SpaceX has been a game changer to the satellite industry, bringing the cost of taking payload to space down significantly and has been the catalyst for a race to bring not just satellites but constellations of satellites to orbit. As a result, we are witnessing exponential growth in satellite launches, with traditional giants like Apple, T- Mobile and Amazon adding satellite functionalities such as internet services and satellite communication. Auriga Space is looking to disrupt the satellite launch industry with its ability to offer high-frequency launches by creating a “catapult” using existing technologies, significantly reducing the cost per kg.   Auriga Space is developing an electromagnetic space launch system that offers significant advantages in launch cost, reliability, frequency, and responsiveness compared to conventional systems.
