This past May, Debbie Painter, senior natural resources specialist at ATCS, led a Wetland Identification course at Sandy Bottom Nature Park. Staff members from various disciplines participated, gaining insights into wetland identification and related federal, state, and local regulations. During the training, the team reviewed soils mapping, topographic maps, and US Fish and Wildlife Service Inventory Maps to analyze a sample project site. Debbie introduced methods for effective soil identification and classification, use of the Munsell Color Chart, and identification of local wetland plants. Participants also learned how to accurately complete wetland data sheets. To simulate a sample project, participants conducted a long transect from east to west through a forested area near Crystal Lake's western shore. Over two days, they assessed soils, vegetation, and hydrology at four waypoints along the transect, successfully identifying a 60-square-foot wetland area. Connect with Kelly C. or Deborah Painter to learn how our experts can help you navigate wetland assessments with precision and efficiency. #Environmental #FieldWork #Conservation #SkillDevelopment #WeAreATCS

In the latest edition of our “A Day in the Life” blog series, we join Environmental Scientist Ivy Babson and Regulatory Compliance & Wildlife Surveys Project Manager Emily Bjorhus, PWS out in the field for a wetland delineation. A wetland delineation is the process of identifying and mapping wetlands, and it's essential for protecting these valuable ecosystems. Let’s see how these scientists perform their work! 🌳

Thank you, The Colorado Sun, for covering this important restoration work! "One technique being implemented in the Poudre River Watershed is installation of post-assisted log structures constructed from untreated lumber driven into the streambed and logs piled upstream against them. These structures function like logjams, breaking the momentum of a stream, spreading water into the soil, and slowing the stream so sediment drops out. These faux logjams also add to stream complexity, creating riffles and pools, side channels and slack water, all of which benefit aquatic insects and native cutthroat trout." https://lnkd.in/gr-X_2tb

We are breaking records!!! (but not the kind we want to break...) 🔺 2023 was the hottest year on record. 🔺 California has burned more acreage this year already than the last 5 years combined by this time. 🔺 Canada has reported 1,000 blazes just 2 weeks into fire season. Last year burn acreage was larger than the state of Pennsylvania. 🔺 New Mexico, California, Utah, Arizona, Oregon, and British Columbia all have regions in which residents had to evacuate due to fire related events. (there are more, but the point is made) It is no surprise that the folks in Law, Fire, and Emergency Management will have their hands full in the months to come. Where hopes and prayers fall short, Planning and preparedness shine. Thank you for all your efforts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sources: https://lnkd.in/eqSgaFfW https://lnkd.in/e-kxiuuH https://lnkd.in/eJMZAntP https://lnkd.in/eiqC6Cng ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ladris AI is evacuation/firemodeling tool made by EM's, for EM's. #evacuations #Emergencymanagement #wildfires #emergencypreparedness #Mitigation #Modeling California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)Washington Emergency Management Division Oregon Department of Emergency Management Utah Division of Emergency Management

Wetland Delineation is one of the nature based Based Solutions Milliken Advisors offers. We are often asked why this service is so important. Wetlands are unique ecosystems that provide numerous ecological services, including water purification, carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat and flood control. Wetland Delineation is an essential tool for identifying wetlands' presence and helping to mitigate future developments' adverse impact on them. Our team evaluates the site's characteristics, including soil type, vegetation and topography, which will let us know if wetlands are present. We then map and document boundaries of wetlands on the property. While it may not seem necessary, wetland delineation is extremely important in maintaining and preserving the land.
