🔥🌲 Important Update from North Bend Fire Department! 🌲🔥 Outer Limits Construction has successfully cleared the underbrush on the west side of U.S. Highway 101, especially around the Pittum Loop area. This significant move is aimed at reducing wildfire risks. A big thank you to the Office of the Oregon State Fire Marshal for their $250,000 community wildfire risk reduction grant that funded this initiative. 🚒 Quick Fact: Firefighters tackled ten brush fires in this area last year. The transformation is remarkable! 🍃➡️🌳 And to ensure the area remains maintained, the North Bend City Council has greenlit the purchase of a grant-funded Cat Skid Steer and Brushcutter. Up next: 🚫 Removal of tires, trash, and debris. 🌳 Addressing a few hazardous trees. 🌿 Collaborating with community partners to eliminate ivy and other invasives. A big shoutout to everyone for their patience during the Pittum Loop closure. Anyone know what the definition of insanity is? 🙋♀️ I'll go. It's doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, and it's exactly what the Parker administration is perpetuating here with its 13 weeks of block cleaning and no follow-up plans for how address systemic waste, litter, illegal dumping and other quality of life issues that have plagued Philly for decades. We've seen this movie before, and it always ends the same way--with perpetually littered and dumped on neighborhoods and disillusioned Philadelphians. We are long past the point where we need real, systemic solutions to these problems. Short-term band-aids like this 13-week program won't create the lasting change we need, and we needed change yesterday. Furthermore, the "if you're not with us, you're against us" rhetoric spouted by Parker at the end of this clip is exactly the kind of rhetoric used by autocrats (and a certain recent U.S. president) who want to silence anyone that believes the solutions on offer are inadequate. It's divisive and dangerous and frankly, just plain gross. At Circular Philadelphia, we continue to advocate for creative, innovative solutions that shift us away from the status quo and towards lasting change that benefits all Philadelphians. Yes, these solutions require more work and leadership than simply sticking your finger in the air and proclaiming "One Philly!" But without them, eventually we won't HAVE a Philly that anyone wants to call home. I am proud of my co-director Nic Esposito for being willing to continue to speak out about the urgency of enacting real solutions, and I implore my fellow non-profit leaders who care about issues related to waste, dumping and climate to join him in speaking up about how this mayoral administration must do better.

🍃 2024 Alabama PALS "Don’t Drop It On Alabama" Statewide Spring Cleanup 🍃 This April 2024, Alabama embarks on a transformative journey with the "Don’t Drop It On Alabama" Statewide Spring Cleanup. Throughout the entire month, we are calling on cities, counties, schools, neighborhoods, and volunteer groups to unite for a monumental cleanup effort across every county in our state. With all supplies and materials furnished, we are fully equipped to tackle the challenges of litter and illegal dumping head-on, improving our community health, environmental sustainability, and even our city budgets. Our recent blog post sheds light on the vast impacts of litter on our communities. #FieldNotes: After destroying more than 2,500 homes and businesses, the largest recorded wildfire in Oregon state history left multiple communities along Highway 99 looking to recover. Known as the Bear Creek Greenway, the region came together as part of a unique area action plan with unified goals. With input directly from community advisory committees, the revisioning process positioned the corridor to come back even stronger than before the Almeda Fire. "It’s unusual to do long-range planning for multiple jurisdictions…Following the Almeda Fire, the unique goals of each community impacted were addressed with project advisory committees to create a unified corridor revisioning." Apply by 12/11 and be part of the change. We're launching an open call for individuals and organizations to join the Rainproof NYC working groups. The groups, co-facilitated and composed of NYC agency staff and community leaders, will focus on: WORKING GROUP 1: How can we shift NYC’s policies and priorities to create a comprehensive plan to prepare for increasing rainfall? Address gaps in infrastructure and risk management to protect from and prepare New Yorkers for more intense precipitation. WORKING GROUP 2: What does an equitable buyout program look like for NYC? Inform the development of the City's Housing Mobility & Land Acquisition Program announced in “PlaNYC: Getting Sustainability Done.” WORKING GROUP 3: How can we build capacity among communities, the private sector, and CBO's to share responsibility to address increased heavy rainfall? Every drop counts. Build out an education and communications campaign to build the capacities of communities, the private sector, CBO's, local nonprofits, and other agencies to do their part in managing increasing heavy rainfall.
