Samba TV shared its insights on the CNN debate. 25.2m HHs watched! Most watched linear TV event outside of the Super Bowl/NFL. Swing states that over-indexed: Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin (+5%-8% each), while these under-indexed: Georgia and Nevada. Building up to this event, Biden has run 5x the number of ad impressions as Trump. Trump will likely be using his new war chest of contributions to step up the pace between now and November. #sambaTVinsights

Matt Hill, as usual, makes an excellent case for TV when talking about the latest OFCOM media nations report. But amongst all the points, the most important is this: "Ofcom also reported that 60% of all video viewing in the UK in 2022 was to the broadcasters – a figure that was stable year-on-year precisely because of the growth in their on-demand services." The key for the broadcasters is that they keep this share stable (or grow) because this is where their business models are now at i.e. being platform-agnostic. In 1H23, 22% of ITV's Total Ad Revenues (TAR) came from digital and that will only grow rapidly. It is understandable the attention is on linear because that is the Broadcasters' traditional business. But that is an outdated, siloed way of thinking. The likes of ITV, Channel 4, STV Group plc etc. are in a different place - yes linear remains very important but the digital side has reached a tipping point. There is one other major potential plus from this shift to digital, namely - if the Broadcasters get it right - they can compete for digital video ad revenues. If #tiktok, #YouTube etc can claim they are a comparable for TV ad revenues, why not the other way round? As usual, this is not investment advice.
The headlines from the latest OFCOM media nations report painted a pretty bleak view of current TV viewing trends. But given the context of the global competition facing the UK broadcasters & the fact 2022 was the first normal year for TV viewing following the pandemic, the data, to me, tells a story of remarkable resilience. https://lnkd.in/e2xmMQr8
