Proud founder, curious funder, applied futurist. Epic failures and a couple of home runs. Deep tech angel + EIC Fund IC. Technology interpreter and rabbit hole explorer. Tech bubble collector. Can’t wait to go skiing.
At #Slush2023 and the Dealroom.coWalden Catalyst VenturesLakestarSifted ”State of European Deep Tech” presentation.
Lots to digest, but to summarize: Europe has a great scientific base to build upon but needs to improve in commercialization and exit possibilities (wake up large corporates!).
Also great to see Sweden at the top of the list in deep tech funding. I suspect that there’s one or two outliers involved here though… 😅🇸🇪😬

Thankyou Madeleine Thun and all of the AstraZeneca Slush crew for your wonderful hospitality at a snowy Slush. As a first timer at this conference, here are some of my panel takeaways:
Everyone was talking about it, everyone was investing in it, everyone was excited about it and everyone was worried about it; this year's hype cycle was of course AI and I swear there wasn't a single session that didn't mention it. Loved how Benedict Evans compared it to having "infinite interns", how Hovhannes Avoyan encouraged us to think of AI as our copilot rather than competition in the "AI won't take your job but the people using it will" chat and how the Duolingo CTO & Founder Severin Hacker (my founder crush this year) is going to use AI as a language assistant for students in the knowledge that customised 1 to 1 tuition is one of the best educational interactions.
A definite bonus of Slush is that is takes place during the annual wind-down and a great opportunity to take stock. There was a general consensus amongst investors & founders that while 2020-1 was a period of exuberance, 2023 was too quiet and the hope was that 2024 would sit nicely somewhere in the middle. While there had been some more healthy valuations, a lot of founders were not actively fundraising rather extending their runway ahead of the next year.
Investors commented on the kind of founder popping up on their radar: a rising number of repeat founders returning with increased scale of ambition, senior leaders from places such as Stripe and Spotify applying their learnings and starting up businesses. During these droughts the most serious founders were hankering down and focussing on the fundamentals; delighting their customers, building a great product, and blocking out the noise to obsess over what they can do move the needle. With Berlin, Paris and London still the obvious hubs, places like Bucharest and Munich were producing some exciting start-ups, too.
Ahead of #cop28, some serious discussion around climate. Every company should view themselves as a climate company ie. one that has a responsibility to to reduce consumption. Strong market forces, & the EC's big bet on reducing greenwash; #CSRD reporting will likely put the pressure on as well. On top of that, GenZ are becoming increasingly aware of the businesses that have climate policies and ESG strategies when they are off job-hunting. Yay to former and youngest ever prime minister Sanna Marin for highlighting the need for these debates to be at the top of every conference agenda.
I wish I could have seen more men in the DEI talks (boring now) and I wish I could have seen more men on the climate and sustainability panels (boring now).
At the end of an exhausting year, the intimacy, low-lighting, few queues, biophyllia, deep conversations, decent programming, all the stuff the Nordics nail, made for a brilliant December conference. AND it's ran by a team of college students. Well done, Slush!
Driving innovation with an amazing team at AstraZeneca - also love dogs!
