Great recap from Defense Innovation Unit (DIU): "During an afternoon summit at its Silicon Valley headquarters, the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) brought together leaders from the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and the commercial sector to discuss ways to deepen collaboration between the government and tech sectors. The summit also emphasized efforts to scale the deployment of commercial technology to users across the DoD. The event focused on ways to address strategic Combatant Command needs with autonomous technology solutions, at scale." #defense #innovation #government #technology

👏 👏 👏 This is an excellent step forward in helping defense innovators overcome the valley of death by ensuring operating units within the DoD have the means necessary to acquire and deploy emerging technologies. "In the House Appropriations Committee’s fiscal 2022 defense spending bill, which the panel approved June 22, lawmakers propose allocating $1 billion toward a DIU-managed “hedge portfolio” made of commercially available systems like low-cost drones and satellites and agile communication nodes. If properly executed, this hedge has the potential to reduce the taxpayer’s burden by leveraging private capital, expand America’s economic advantage by accelerating emerging technology, and broaden the pool of talent supporting national defense.” #defensetechnology #defensetech #dualuse #nationalsecurity https://lnkd.in/dnN-pkrB

Another fantastic article by Eric Lipton of The New York Times. Eric does a great job on national defense, and I encourage everyone to follow his reporting. "But Shield AI story also demonstrates the many hurdles that the new generation of military contractors face as they compete for Pentagon funding against the far bigger and more entrenched weapons makers that have been supplying the military for decades. And the growing role of artificial intelligence in national security is playing out against concerns about granting life-or-death decisions to software programs and at a time when governments are taking initial steps to regulate development of the technology." This is the existential question for many of the new defense tech companies: Will the fear of both a near peer and an increasingly dangerous world catalyze the United States Department of Defense to shift to this essential new technology and change a risk averse acquisition culture? I don't think we have a choice anymore and that change is upon us. I imagine other investors in the defense industry, like our firm Disruptive, feel the same way. https://lnkd.in/g9wJ9c4P

Innofense: How the Israeli Ministry of Defense is prioritizing dual-use technologies and start-ups to accelerate defense technology Col. Nir Weingold, Head of the Planning, Economics and IT Department in the DDR&D, spoke to Breaking Defense about the Ministry of Defense's Innofense program and the importance of innovation in achieving and maintaining technological prowess. “The IDF need quick answers to their problems, so time-to-market must be fast,” Col. Weingold said. “We are in huge competition with commercial market because start-ups look to civilian market. So we want to transform commercial capabilities to defense R&D.”

“There are signs that integration has begun in earnest. Earlier this month, Adm. John Acquilino, the head of US Indo-Pacific Command, announced a new directorate under his command to more easily connect industry to the military’s key innovation programs. As part of the new “Joint Mission Accelerator Directorate,” DIU will be sending an embed to INDOPACOM who will serve as the directorate’s deputy and chief technology officer. DIU will also be a key part in supporting a recently announced effort dubbed Replicator, which aims to field thousands of attritable autonomous systems in an effort to counter China’s military mass. Although its exact role within the initiative is somewhat unclear, the organization will help “set the agenda” for Replicator and help “to catalyze the rest of the team, which is really a whole of department team to get after the work of the [Defense] Innovation Steering Group, which Replictor’s the first big bang that the group is focusing on.” #ai #innovationecosystem #defenseinnovation #defensetechnology #datavisualization https://lnkd.in/gBPg8uka

Great technology doesn’t win wars, people win wars. But the #technology certainly helps. Now more than ever, commercial capital #investors, intentionally or not, are filling an innovation gap by accelerating the design and realization of critical battlefield solutions before war breaks out. Some of these companies began with the defense customer in mind such as Anduril Industries, Aalyria and Shield AI, but equally promising are those that did not, but are now critical to the United States Department of Defense such as Skydio, ŌURA and ICON. If we can augment our current acquisition system to more readily listen to the actual user in the battle field, regardless of rank or position in the acquisition infrastructure, we'll get to the right answer for everyone, much faster, as our allies in global conflict are showing us now.
