The US Army would gain a drone branch under proposed language in the 2025 defense authorization bill, a move intended to further professionalize the field and put it on par with the service’s other disciplines.  Currently, the Army fields 22 branches, from air defense artillery to transportation. The branches are the building blocks of the Army, with each job, or military occupational specialty, organized under a branch. #army #humanresources #drones

This interesting Defense News article looks at the US Navy's deployment of unmanned surface vessels (USV) across the Pacific to Japan as part of the US Navy’s Integrated Battle Problem 23.2 Exercise. This is the first time that USVs have been integrated into routine fleet operations. The US Navy has provided no detail on the payload of these USVs, however, the photos in this article suggest that the Mariner and Ranger could have Mk70 launchers on their decks. This would allow the US Navy to exercise integration of strike from USVs using third party sensing and targeting. #usnavy #ausnavy

BAE Systems has delivered a first-in-its-kind Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) Turreted Mortar prototype to the US Army. The prototype showcases a newly designed top plate system—the External Mission Equipment Package (ExMEP)—that allows for the easy installation of a variety of turrets. This vehicle prototype is also outfitted with the Patria NEMO remote-controlled 120mm turreted mortar system. The result of a rapid collaborative technology investment effort involving the U.S. Army, BAE Systems, and KONGSBERG/Patria, the prototype demonstrates potential variant growth for the highly adaptable AMPV family of vehicles. By using a fielded and fully-qualified asset like the AMPV chassis, it gives the Army options to field combat capabilities—such as the Patria NEMO—to Soldiers who need them at a much faster pace and reduced cost.
