With all of these layoffs in the industry I'm seeing a lot of indie studios being popped up! This is super cool! 🤘🏼 New designers and devs, like my team and I, are having a huge struggle trying to find employment in the industry. So, we formed a team to keep up practices and enhance our portfolios. The same thing is happening with amazing people who have years of experience. They are struggling to get a new job, so they join/form a team. The reason I find this super cool is because it seems to be the rise of indie games! Indie games are getting more and more high quality for an affordable price. Thankfully the games industry is one of the few able to have this type of solution. Game engines are becoming more and more beginner friendly so it's easier for smaller teams and/or solo devs to make it big, if not bigger than some AAA titles. What are YOUR thoughts on the current state of the industry? 🧐 #opentowork #gamedesign #projectmanagement #gamedesigngrad

Hey all, For those of my connections impacted by the many game dev layoffs and studio closures today, I wanted to share some job hunt resources I've found useful: https://gamejobs.co/ - A solid collection of roles which gets regularly updated. https://lnkd.in/gGhQyHY2 - Another collection of roles that's regularly updated, but usually has fewer listings than the above. https://lnkd.in/gHZU-jMx - Another job board which has been largely UK focused in my experience. https://gamedevmap.com/ - A listing of all companies across the world. If the standard LinkedIn and Indeed wells run dry, I've had some success looking on company pages for roles. https://lnkd.in/ghy-dmuF - The IGDA's listing of available roles. https://lnkd.in/gdMRVwV3 - Kinda dead, but occasionally posts a new job. https://lnkd.in/gqjsjAif - An amazing collection of job seeker resources (including a regularly updated Google Sheet with jobs searchable by role) compiled by the amazing Amir Satvat. https://lnkd.in/gZmC79B9 - A game dev networking Discord group's careers section. https://lnkd.in/gn-skvk6 - The 600 Facebook group - made when Blizzard had a big layoff a few years back and has grown since then. It's pretty Orange County / Cali-centric, but you'll occasionally see other roles listed. https://lnkd.in/gC4PFgrc - Another Facebook Group for games industry gigs. https://lnkd.in/gh8MpPB6 - The IGDA Writer SIG's Facebook page, which periodically posts writing roles. https://www.upwork.com/ - I just learned of this site today, so haven't used it yet, but it sounds as if there's paid and volunteer contract gigs available for folks looking for support making indie games. Some may be unrealistic asks (i.e. "Make an MMO for me for $13!"), but it might be a spot to find some paying work or get some work you can point to in interviews while between jobs. Feel free to add your own spots for seeking work or tag anyone who may find this useful. I'm also in the market for a job, so would welcome some new gigs I might not be aware of. Hope this helps all!

Christiaan is a real asset to your team, can recommend :)
Some unexpected news - unfortunately I was let go from my new job before I even got the chance to dive in. That means I'm on the lookout for new gigs, be it a permanent position or contract work, effective immediately! I'm well versed in C# and Unity game development. Love building solid systems, cool tools, and have a big interest in multiplayer/networking! That said, I won't shy away from other challenges! If you know someone who needs a hand in this area, or if you're looking for someone yourself, give me a shout. Always up for a new adventure and really appreciate any pointers or intros. Thanks a bunch! #opentowork #opentoopportunities

Do any fellow game devs or aspiring game devs sometimes feel this way? It's clear that this industry is so, so competitive in terms of the wealth of talent it sees and the vast numbers of people who want to work in games professionally. I try not to let social media get to my head too much, but it's also clear that the industry is in turmoil, with tens of thousands in layoffs, abundant studio closures, and an apparent funding desert. I have yet to cross-examine these observations with existing statistics on the games job market, but I can concur based on vibes alone it really feels Not Good. My main point is that it can feel hard to motivate myself to keep improving, keep pushing to complete projects or endeavors that don't seem to directly lead to a stable job with livable income, and keep trying to acquire skills and experiences when there always seem to be a thousand candidates that could do the job better. To stand out in this industry (or any industry, I suppose) you really need to be ruthless with making yourself an asset to employers, but it can feel like a futile endeavor a lot of the time. Applying to jobs without any kind of referral or relevant connection also seems to be fairly doomed, but somehow also never ill-advised...I for one am certainly prone to doom and gloom thinking, so mentally I'm definitely struggling. 😅

📣 BIG NEWS 📣 Today, I announced to my team that I will be departing Zapper Games as their Technical Designer and looking for new opportunities. Firstly, I just want to say thank you to Zapper Games for the opportunity to build and contribute my own ideas to an original IP that I can't wait for the world to see! You are all great to work with and exceptionally talented individuals building something awesome! ❤️ Although it is bittersweet and might seem crazy at a time when our industry feels so volatile and unsafe, I have always believed in myself and my ability to land on my feet. I just know things will work out for me, mostly because I refuse to give up on myself or my dreams. With that said, I will be ramping up my own development and services that I can provide to the game development community to help inspire and enable others to create their dream games using Unreal Engine. More about this to come in the very near future. Without further adieu, I am now looking for new opportunities and open to work. If anyone is looking for a Technical Designer or Game Designer feel free to reach out. I have nearly a decade worth of experience working with Unreal Engine and have taken multiple projects from concept to release on various storefronts and platforms. #opentowork #unrealengine #gamedevelopment #newbeginnings #lookingforwork #openforwork #gamedev #gamedesign #gamedevjobs

Did you know that my first job when I was 15 was working at Cold Stone Creamery? I worked there for over 3 years and then later returned to manage that store for another 2 1/2 years! I love Ice Cream! Okay? Why is a Game Designer talking about Ice Cream? Might I suggest that Video Games and Ice Cream actually have a lot in common. • There are thousands of kinds and everyone has there own favorite. • What might be good to one person, is bad to another. • Personal preferences aside, it is hard to argue with the greatness of the classics like Vanilla, Chocolate, Mario, and Zelda. • They all exist to bring joy and happiness to your life. Alright so now that you are here, to be honest, this post was really my attempt at a creative way to grab your attention. As you may know, my role at Treyarch was made redundant back in January and I am still on the lookout for my next role! I want to help you or someone you know concoct the next great flavor of video game style ice cream. So are you looking for a designer to 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦, 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, and 𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 upon your 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, and 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 systems and features? If so, let's talk! So tell me, what is your favorite Ice Cream and Video Game? #GameDev #GameDesign #GameIndustry #OpenToWork #GamingCareers

! Availible For Work! I had a very interesting conversation yesterday about the status of the games industry after the unity announced layoffs. With over 10,000 jobs lost in 2023 alone in games and tech I find myself asking more and more "Is there actually room for everyone in this industry?" It seems like every day we see layoffs numbering 50+ or more while seeing maybe one or two people actually getting new roles with one or two new studios starting up every month or so. At this rate it will take years for enough jobs and projects to start to get everyone back into a role they were in before. It's important more than ever now to diversify incomes, pursue your own projects, and take a gamble on yourself. It's going to take years for our industry to naturally heal itself, it's now more important than ever to make your own path rather than waiting for things to return to normal. For everyone out there needing to pick up other day jobs and income opportunities, you aren't alone, hang in there. Use these struggles and challenges to create new and interesting things. That strange co-worker you just got might end up being the catalyst for the most interesting piece of work on your portfolio some day! #available #openforwork #techart #technicalartist #gamesindustry #games #gamesjobs #videogames #2024planning #rigging #videogames

DisturbanceInTheForce: GameLoft (Toronto) GamesIndustryBiz: "Report of mass layoffs at Gameloft Toronto. 49 people were reportedly let go yesterday" "Update: Gameloft has confirmed layoffs to GamesIndustry.biz, with a spokesperson saying it was "necessary" for the studio to "implement a reduction in workforce" due to the current situation of the games market. "As a company, we need to constantly review our production capacities," the statement read. "After careful consideration and in response to the ever-changing market conditions we are facing, it has become necessary to implement a reduction in workforce. "Unfortunately, this leads us to substantially reduce our production activity in our Toronto studio and to let go some employees of the office. This decision has not been taken lightly, and we understand the impact it may have on affected employees. We will be working with them, on a case-by-case basis, to find the best way to handle their situation." Original story: The majority of Gameloft Toronto has reportedly been laid off, GamesIndustry.biz has been told. Only HR, IT, and management are believed to be unaffected by the cuts, which reportedly would see the developer's title, 2016's Disney Magic Kingdoms, transferred to Gameloft's studio in Kharkiv, Ukraine. All staff who had been working on the title in Toronto have reportedly been laid off, representing around 49 people. In addition to our own sources, community manager Tasha Huggins has written a Linkedin post in which she mentions that yesterday was her last day at Gameloft Toronto. "As of today, there is a lot of incredible talent that has just entered the market," she said. "If you are interviewing anyone from the Gameloft Toronto/Disney Magic Kingdoms team, please reach out to me. I would love another opportunity to talk about just how amazing they are." According to our information, the other project Gameloft Toronto was working on has been cancelled following the first round of layoffs at the company back in February. A second round of redundancies reportedly happened in April, during which 40 people were also let go. Elevating Careers in Gaming | Global Learning and Development Manager 🚀 | Creating Impact through Learning and Growth 🌱
I want to talk about careers, specifically in the games industry. Did you know that there's more to the games industry than just art, design, and programming? Really, there’s a whole lot more. CIG is unique in that we possibly display the widest array of careers needed in the games industry under one roof. Every career is crucial to the development of our product. You don’t need to be a wizard at coding, the Da Vinci of anatomy, or the Ive of design. Sometimes, you can be that one person who just goes out of their way to make everyone’s working day that much better—like Ashley McGovern. The point is, there is a place for everyone in games, no matter where you are from or what your passion is. It's all about perspective. The next 12 months are going to be our biggest yet, and I want to show the next generation where they fit in the games industry. Check out this amazing resource created by Simon Lawson 🔜Develop Brighton, one of our awesome Talent Acquisition Team. I will be breaking this down over the coming weeks and sharing it with schools and colleges. But for now, here's a little peek. #GamesIndustry #CareersInGaming #BeyondArtAndCode #GamingJobs #GameDevCommunity #FutureOfGaming #DiverseGamingRoles #GamingPassion #GameIndustryInsights #CareerOpportunities #GamingEducation
