I planted a seed in John, and I am glad to know that it is beginning to sprout right before I leave the fellowship. John, 14, is one of the kids I met in my class when I joined the fellowship in 2022. He used to be a child who was all on his own, with low confidence, struggling with learning, and having just repeated the class. I understood all these challenges and tried to view things from his perspective. It took a while to encourage him and get him more interested in learning, but eventually, my efforts are beginning to pay off. I believe this outcome is a result of the different strategies I tried with him. One thing that stood out was getting him involved in class activities by asking him questions, which kept him engaged. I would encourage him with kind words if his answer was incorrect and reward him for a job well done whenever he got a question right. Also, the fact that I would have one-to-one conversation with him made a difference. This was the turning point, as he developed his confidence, overcame the stigma of repeating a class, and now converses freely with classmates. While there are certain decisions he might have felt were not in his favor, I hope he understands better in the future why those decisions were made. I believe that the other areas we are working on will continue to develop even after my stay at the school. Had an amazing experience yesterday sitting in a discussion with Antoinette Redmond and current University of Missouri-Kansas City First-Gen Roos! Only 26% of first-gen students complete their degree and it was rewarding to sit with these students, and share our stories and lessons learned to become first-gen graduates 🎓 Being a first-generation student comes with its own set of challenges, but the rewards are truly life-changing. Some of the wonderful conversations included: 🤝 Building a support system: Connect with mentors, professors, and fellow first-gen students. You'll learn from each other and celebrate milestones together. 🧑🏫 Embrace the Resources: Don't be afraid to utilize all the resources available on campus - from financial aid workshops to tutoring centers. They're there to help you thrive! ✨ Own your Success: To paraphrase Antoinette Redmond... You are awesome just for enrolling in classes and being here today!
