Must read report from Giving Gap and Heather Infantry on the state of black-founded nonprofits today. * Black leaders reported being deeply involved in their organization's daily operations. * Black leaders have personal experience related to their nonprofit's mission, fueling their commitment toward the organization's causes. * Founder's primary motivation for their work is passion and belief in the mission, followed by lived experience. * Passion and commitment don't pay the bills, many Black leaders need to supplement their nonprofit income with additional jobs due to financial constraints. *The top need identified is financial support for general operations. These reasons and others are why our San Jose Giving Circle has focused on the BIPOC-led proximate organizations in our neighborhoods. We have funded some extraordinary black-led nonprofits (fiscally sponsored projects) which face the challenges outlined above. These organizations include Parenting with a Purpose, Muindi Foundation, and PARTI Program founded by Colette Choates, Nyla Choates, Winston Ashby, Serena M., and Tim Muindi. Congratulations to Heather Infantry and the Giving Gap on the release their report on the state of black-founded nonprofits today. It's outstanding, please read it! A few highlights: * "Black leaders and their organizations are forced to navigate a funding ecosystem that unfairly advantages their white counterparts and restricts their own capacity for growth. * "Black leaders and their organizations are forced to navigate a funding ecosystem that unfairly advantages their white counterparts and restricts their own capacity for growth. * Sixty percent of the survey respondents work for orgs founded by Black woman. * Over sixty percent of the respondents have additional jobs to supplement their incomes. * Black women support causes with their time, actions, and even capital, as they give 25% more of their wealth compared to white donors. These organizations do so much with so little. They are committed to their causes and communities, but continuously underfunded. And yet..."increased support was usually short-lived." For culturally safe and accessible resources for Black people, visit Black Mental Health Canada: https://lnkd.in/dr_zWWF   As we continue to celebrate, honour and reflect this Black History Month, it’s important for us at Vancity Community Foundation to acknowledge that the philanthropic sector we are a part of has its roots in white supremacy and colonialism. This legacy reverberates today, and its impacts were spotlighted by the Network for the Advancement of Black Communities and Carleton University’s Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership program’s report “Unfunded: Black Communities Overlooked by Canadian Philanthropy”, which helped form what is known today as Foundation for Black Communities . You can read the report here: https://lnkd.in/grD8DHP Among its many findings and recommendations, the report found that for every $100 disbursed by the top 15 Canadian foundations, only $0.07 went to Black-led organizations and $0.70 went to Black-serving organizations. When looking at the top 10 foundations, just 0.03% of grants were disbursed to Black-led organizations and 0.13% to Black-serving organizations. As we begin to learn how we can shift our philanthropic approach to be more inclusive of and prioritize the needs and futures of Black people, we invite funders to join us by making an enduring commitment to supporting equity-seeking communities that have been systemically overlooked. August is #BlackPhilanthropyMonth, a celebration of the legacy of Black giving and the ingenuity of Black philanthropic leadership. According to the Black Future Co-op Fund, traditional philanthropy only invests 1.8% in Black-led nonprofits. Moving toward shared abundance requires intentional, significant increased investment in Black communities.
