And how much more important it is that we listen to what’s going on for them, supporting them as they navigate through conflict to resolution, not just settlement of the legal issues. With the advance of neuroscience coupled with the pain of what’s transpired during the COVID years, our clients demand a different kind of service (and attention) from the advocate/mediator professional. We know that feelings influence outcomes. We know that emotions convey information that can be used strategically if we know what to look for. What projects are you pursuing in your life and how do they actually affect your wellbeing? Listening to Adam Grant & Brian Little conversation on "the science of personality and the art of wellbeing" https://lnkd.in/eXdC6k3U is eye opening. There are multiple factors that determine whether a project affects us positively or negatively, among them: 1. how *meaningful* they are to us - aligned to our values and self-expressive 2. how *manageable* they are for us - surprisingly meaningful projects that are too challenging for us do not bring us wellbeing, and the one factor that affects our wellbeing is whether we can achieve our goal and succeed at our project. meaning and manageability go hand in hand! 3. *connection* - how does our project affect others around us and do we get credit for it? 4. if we experience lots of *positive emotions* doing this project 5. conversely, if we get very *stressed* out doing this project - the project (even if highly meaningful) will burn us out! In addition, looking at how our life projects affect each other (cross-impact matrix) might give us deeper insights, as well as looking at how our chosen projects interact (and potentially interfere) with those of our loved ones (joint cross-impact matrix). I first started learning about positive psychology more deeply in my early 20s when I had the pleasure of working alongside and supporting the work of Dr. Diana Brecher and Dr. Deena Kara Shaffer,. The PERMA model was something that stood out and has only become more valuable to me since. I find the subject of empathy fascinating, I feel it's integral to supporting individuals towards adaptive and pro-social behaviours. My training in psychotherapy opened the door to exploring this concept that is so integral to social species and connection and I love discovering the different ways that humans experience empathy. https://lnkd.in/e7QxWcdi

When it comes to self-improvement and positive transformation, self-awareness is arguably always the first step in the journey. Before we can make meaningful change, we must learn to become aware of our dysfunctional, self-defeating behaviors. Especially in the early stages of cultivating self-awareness, opening our eyes to a more objective reality can feel like a slap in the face at times. Remember to give yourself grace, and tell yourself that you can and will do better moving forward. The purpose of cultivating self-awareness is not to beat yourself up. The goal is moving forward to bigger and better things, and not dwelling on the past. No matter what your awareness brings to your attention, keep in mind that we all have room for improvement, and that you are not alone on that path. We can all do better, for ourselves, and for each other.
