Sourcing #green #electricity from Iceland even though consumption is located in Italy? Claiming the consumption of Californian solar electricity even though you are located on the East Coast? These are all viable energy procurement options that are in line with common carbon accounting practices, but it is common knowledge that this does not work in reality. But where does one draw the line? This report presents a framework that helps explore various geographical boundaries that could serve as market boundaries for procuring electricity, and I am happy to have been able to have provided my perspective on parts of this publication. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that the electricity that companies claim to consume can actually be delivered to them, making their X% renewable statements much more credible and impactful. This is just one of the things that are currently under review in the ongoing revision process of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), aiming to create a more “rigorous and credible accounting foundation for businesses to measure, plan and track progress toward science-based and net-zero targets in line with the global 1.5°C goal.” #carbonaccounting #energyprocurement #corporatesustainability
There is a growing need for carbon and clean energy accounting standards to better align with the physical and market realities of today's electricity systems. A new paper by Singularity Energy and The Brattle Group sheds light on how this can be done:

There's something to be learned from utility energy efficiency programs. "By including the resilience benefits of enhanced energy performance, passive survivability, and system recovery, (utilities) can more accurately capture the additional value streams from building energy resilience in programmatic and regulatory approaches."

A more proactive approach to transmission and renewable energy permitting through a federal siting authority could revolutionize the energy industry. With optimal siting of wind energy in high potential zones, the benefits of expanding transmission between regions are enormous. A recent study by the U.S. Department of Energy highlights the importance of new transmission capacity in the middle of the country. The largest benefits will come from expanding transmission between regions, and the DOE found that accessing low-cost generation potential through increased transmission is cost-effective for neighboring regions. Find out more about the potential benefits of advanced bulk permitting of transmission and wind projects in this article: https://bit.ly/3LOmGBa #renewableenergy #transmissionpermitting #windenergy #energyindustry #sitingauthority
