Are you more of a collaborative thinker or a competitive one? The owner’s of Make ‘Ur Merch, Lawrence & TiJuana Gholson, have pioneered a new way to do merchandising. They are reducing the overhead of small businesses by giving them the opportunity to collaborate in a shared space by simply renting shelf instead of renting an entire building. The customers one merchant brings into the store will always create an opportunity for the other merchant’s products to be seen and sold. With the paralyzing impact of inflation and more people living paycheck to paycheck, I am seeing more people turn to their creativity to make a little extra money. Whether your side business is candle making, jewelry, photography, body products, or clothing design, your products deserve to be and can be on a shelf. On the shelf, can take you from having a “little business” with a little extra income in your budget to a big 2nd stream of financial stability. I’m honored to sit on the panel to discuss the new opportunities creators have in Hampton Roads to move their products from the trunk of their car to the shelves of the new co-merchandizing space in Williamsburg, VA. The opportunity for small business owner to expand their reach and position themselves on shelves like bigger companies increases their opportunity to get noticed and build generational wealth. The way we are doing business is changing and we have to change with it. It will take collaborative innovative ideas like this to stay relevant and in demand. This business model demonstrates that we actually can build wealth faster when we see each other as collaborators, rather than competition. Always be thinking, “How can we work together in a way that allows us to do more than we ever could do individually?” What are your thoughts?

A principle isn’t a real principle until it costs you something. I read a Bill Bernbach quote that was similar to this a few years back and it has stuck with me. It’s a saying I’ve also obliquely felt at Patreon. I’ve been working with folks there for the past few months, helping them transition toward a new app, brand, and identity*. A true rebrand doesn’t happen over night, but with about a month of distance after our launch, we’re seeing positive results. Our bet to go against the grain of traditional branding has movement. Corporate identity was designed to streamline and build character back into a company. Before this, people knew who they were buying something from because that person or company was in their community. Corporate identity benefitted the company over the individuality of the consumer or worker. What I appreciate about Patreon is that it’s trying to distribute recognition to its creators first—literally living one of their values (“Put creators first”). I believe this rejection of past identity principles reflects a contemporary moment where a spectrum of identities can be acknowledged. Some might mistakenly call it a style, but I’d say it’s a way of being in keeping with our times. The quote is talking about the importance of having a strong and consistent brand identity. In other words, a brand is not just a logo or a set of colors - it's about the overall impression and feeling that your brand evokes in people. When you have a strong brand identity, it's easier for people to remember and recognize your brand, and it helps to build trust and loyalty. Do you know why I called my business ‘Black Nova Designs’ when I started it…?     Well, quite simply, I’ve loved outer space for as long as I can remember! When I was a child daydreaming about space was an escape from reality, something which seemed limitless and could transport me anywhere I wanted to go. I didn’t get the chance to travel much, and so that was my way of broadening my horizons.     As an adult, I’ve kept that same sense of adventure and curiosity, and I love to travel whenever I get the chance. I still see sci-fi as a way to explore beyond this world, and I’m just as spellbound by the ideas of no limits or constraints.     When I began the process of building a brand identity for my own business, I wanted to evoke that same sense of limitless possibility and new beginnings. ‘Nova’ means new star in Latin, and I like to think our IT services give lots of people and their businesses the chance to shoot for the stars. The theme of space has given us an immediately identifiable brand and it gives me a real buzz that it all stems back to my childlike wonder about the night sky, stars and planets. Self-selection~~ to be intransitive is real. AND Design work is its language of choice. Let’s unpack that because it’s quite important—or go watch a cat video on that tok-tik thing? You’re staying? Excellent. ✅Self-selection is real and so was vaporizing a limited-edition inventory of this image that you see here printed up on Vintage White like the tees worn of yesteryear. 😶 How fast did the inventory vaporize? In under 52 hours. No, it’s not 1 hour—52 is still legit. WHY? Several things. Here are a few. Scarcity- That they will never be printed again (they won't be). Resonation- The designs vintage vibe that spoke to the viewer. Awareness- Already being a fan of RAMCHARGERS and all that they stand for. Those are key ingredients—and when we know them---the sky’s the limit. Working with RAMCHARGERS was surreal--- They weren’t certain of all the ingredients (we worked that out during a “spit-balling session”). But they did know they wanted a design CELEBRATING 65 years in the scene as a brand that is still (VERY) relevant. How are your designs stacking up? How is your brand doing? Another good logo bites the dust... Eddie Bauer first began in 1920 and is known for their first patented down jacket in America. Just passing their 100th anniversary and upon the arrival of their new CEO in 2022, it's no surprise that they took a step back to look at the brand before beginning this new chapter. Tim Bantle, the new CEO, shared three goals: 1. Focusing more on wholesale retail 2. Increasing international distribution 3. Reaching a new generation of customers. From a technical perspective, the prior logo does have some odd proportions and the "e" is somewhat hard to read so paired with situation above, I *completely* understand the desire for a rebrand. However, I think the rebrand outcome is far from successful... Even with its technical quirks, the Eddie Bauer brand has built a very *recognizable* brand over the last 100 years that conveyed a sense of authenticity and quality that's hard to match. You can recognize it from a mile away. To totally abandon what was and replace it with something as basic as the new logomark seems like a massive oversight. They state the reasoning for replacing the script lettering is because it looks outdated and in part due to kids not learning cursive in school anymore (going against goal #3) however are kids that age really their target demographic? Surely, even if they wanted to move away from script lettering, wasn't there anything more interesting and authentic than what the final outcome is? Both the "Eddie Bauer" lettering and the goose seem so cookie cutter. After visiting their site, I can help but feel like I'm shopping at discounted Eddie Bauer. I'll give it more of a chance in the coming months as any change is hard at first, especially to a 100+ year old company, but whew, feelin' pretty sad about this one.
