At one of our recent People Leaders Program workshop, we had the privilege of gaining insights from both millennials and Gen Z participants about their perceptions of leadership. What stood out were the expectations of the Gen Z participants, particularly their belief in leaders as infallible figures—knowledgeable, visionary, and fearless. While these qualities are admirable, they can inadvertently create barriers for aspiring leaders and place undue pressure on managers. The perception that leaders must be flawless—never making mistakes and always having the right answers—can be paralyzing for young professionals. It instills a fear of failure and inadequacy, leading many talented individuals to doubt their readiness to step into leadership roles. Moreover, these unrealistic expectations extend beyond individuals' self-perceptions and seep into their expectations of the leaders they follow. The pressure to embody these idealized qualities places a heavy burden on managers, who may feel compelled to project an image of invincibility. This pressure to emulate perfection can result in a lack of transparency, authenticity, and vulnerability in leadership—which are essential qualities for building trust and fostering meaningful connections within teams. However, it's crucial to recognize that true leadership is not about perfection; it's about authenticity, vulnerability, and continuous growth. Leaders are human beings who make mistakes, experience fear, and learn from failures. Embracing these imperfections is what makes leaders relatable, approachable, and ultimately more effective. We would like to challenge these misconceptions and redefine what it means to be a leader in today's world.
