"The future needs passionate, happy and confident young leaders, willing to challenge the status quo and stand up for their convictions." - Richard Branson This was exactly one minute before I had the privilege of presenting for 90 minutes on behalf of PEQ Performance Consulting LLC to 85 9-12 grade leaders who are all a part of Conejo Las Virgenes Future Foundation. It was pure joy. A took a bit of a risk and didn't do a traditional presentation. Instead, I deconstructed a presentation so they could understand why and how a leader inspires and grows her people. In the end I gave them five takeaways because leaders don't have followers; they build other leaders: 1. Start with Empathy. Know who is in the room and why. 2. Establish Trust with community agreements, so everyone can safely show up authentically and creatively. 3. See and acknowledge people for WHO they are, not what they do. 4. Guide your team from Surviving to Thriving by providing regular opportunities to show up in curiosity and reframe challenges. 5. Inspire others by inspiring yourself first. Fill up as you want to show up. The response from these amazing teens has been overwhelming and has definitely inspired me to show up brighter today. The private messages, emails and meaningful moments from these young leaders have given me so much hope for the next generation, and renewed my passion in giving back to these rising changemakers. LinkedIn is an odd social media platform for me. In reality I'm not big on posting ANYTHING on ANY social media (unless I'm traveling), much less speak about accomplishments.    However, I'm very proud of having worked the last year through an extensive leadership training at Hays. Finishing 12 months of sessions, small groups, assignments, thought sharing, and learning, I'm looking forward to putting everything into practice. Huge shout out to Jason Motley for moderating us and Shenlee Walker for all the tough love and watching our group forget what "BIFF" stands for ...    BUT!    Jason asked us to share what our key takeaway was from the past year of leadership training, and I doubt it's a surprise to many, but mine is "PEOPLE FIRST". Beware the know-it-all! ‘being an expert’ came up in conversation several times this week and it quickly led to the opinion that business leaders need to be an expert at what they do, particularly when they are around other business leaders. If 'expert' means they have to appear to have it all sussed, I'm going to disagree! For me, the best business leaders I have worked with are acutely aware of how much they don’t know. They have no desire to be the smartest person in the room but have the unrelenting desire to learn from others. Here's the thing. Business leaders that are not growing themselves are going to struggle to lead a growing business. One of the hallmarks of successful business leaders is their insatiable curiosity. If you aren't curious, about every aspect of your business you are at significant risk of stagnation at best, trust me! So, all you amazing business leaders, get curious and don’t worry about being the smartest person in the room!
