In the best of ways, Q3 was a busy quarter for Salient - a tidal wave of new customers, a large philanthropic grant to be announced next week, a groundbreaking product release, and new key employees. When was the last time you asked yourself about you? A little over ten years ago, I sat in a large classroom on the top floor of the American University - Kogod School of Business while listening to then Dean Lawrence P. Ward, Ed.D. explain the most important lessons our cohort was going to receive over the next two and a half years; we'd learn to ask the right questions, how to remain disciplined enough to not follow the right answers to the wrong questions, and that profit and purpose were not at ends with one another. Over the last few months, I asked myself (and on more than one occasion a few other people) a series of questions about what I wanted to do professionally, where I wanted to live, and what I didn’t want to do. As I engaged in this proactive reflection a few things became clear; I love Seattle – the natural beauty, the outdoor focus of activities, the companies that choose to call it home, and of course, the Market's flower vendors. Staying here was important and I didn't want it to be a weekend home. It also became clear to me that I’m at my best when I’m on a team – I like working with others to solve complex problems. Last but not least - What kind of impact do I want to have? As I arrived at the last question, I recalled Dean Ward’s words and compared it to my experience and my answer was again clear; I want work that enables me to make a positive impact for my community and our country. With the answers to these questions, I set out for my next adventure and after a bit of a search, I am over the moon to announce that I am joining Hazel Lorrin and Slalom Seattle as a Principal in the Public and Social Impact Space! From the first conversation with Kelli Suguro Murayama – I knew Slalom was going to live up to their incredible reputation and at each step I met another amazing person who lived up to that reputation. I can hardly believe it but last Saturday was my 10 year anniversary as an attorney, all of which I have spent at my amazing firm Troutman Pepper. From the start I had doubts I would make it this far. My practice went from being unbearably busy when I was a summer to extremely slow. Luckily my firm had several areas of support, including other practices from which I could draw work and experience. I didn't have a traditional biglaw practice group. I was (and am!) in a niche group that does amazing work, but not in one of the big groups for which Troutman is known. Nevertheless, the firm (and my mentors in particular) has had my back, letting me form my own destiny in a way that works for me. Whenever I put myself out there to start making a name for myself and hopefully develop some business, I didn't think I had anything special to offer. It took me a long, long time to get over this (still haven't completely licked it if I'm honest), but learning that all lawyers have some kind of impostor syndrome was a big help. Things I would do differently if I had to do it again: 💡 Get involved in a meaningful way in 2-3 groups that matter to me and make sense for my practice much much earlier. I'm now in the leadership of Technology Association of Georgia's Infrastructure Society and the Atlanta Bar Association's charitable foundation. It's working well for me. I could have started even sooner! 💡 Don't turn down or discount networking or leadership opportunities just because it's not obvious how it will lead to billable hours. 💡 Reach out to someone every single day for coffee, lunch, whatever kind of get together.
