Someone may have just saved the summer box office: families. "Inside Out 2" could aptly be renamed "Up, Up and Away" as the Disney and Pixar sequel scored a mighty $155 million in its first weekend of release. It's the biggest debut since "Barbie" and the second-highest animation opening ever. Put another way, this movie's success is a giant inflatable pool toy keeping the hopes of Hollywood studios afloat right now. Hollywood needs more financial success sequels. A triumph for Pixar...but not necessarily for the rest of the box office. While some will say it's a sign that audiences comfortable with waiting and watching new releases at home via streaming are perhaps returning to theaters, this may be a victory for Pixar alone. Here's why: families have fallen back in love with the magic of Pixar on the big screen. We can cite all the huge openings for Pixar films of the past (e.g. Toy Story, Incredibles, etc.), but the movie already had a big following. Ticket sales for "Inside Out 2" even dwarfed the original film, which opened at $90.5 million. The first 'Inside Out' went on to become a runaway success, winning an Oscar and grossing a total of $356 million in North America and a staggering $858.8 million globally. This isn't "Last Action Hero", but we need a better one. A good script matters. Go figure! From pandemic behavior that's carried over to our post-pandemic lives to the Hollywood writer's strike, much has been made about why the box office is tanking this year. But very little has focused on the obvious: good content. Being entertaining is one thing, but audiences are much more savvy when it comes to movies that have little substance or are simply vehicles for marketing merchandise. Even the metric of using weekend releases to gauge success may be due for a retooling. Hollywood may be obsessed with blockbusters, but the strategy needs to transition from betting on a handful of major releases each year to providing more consistent quality productions throughout the entire year. It's still "A Family Affair". Another interesting wrinkle: the inclusion of social issues in children's movies and being too grown up. Disney, for example, has faced criticism for tackling themes some viewers consider too mature or not relatable for younger audiences. This highlights the ongoing debate about the role of social messages in children's entertainment. Should the focus be purely on fun, or is there space for more complex themes? Studios are still navigating this balance. While the success of "Inside Out 2" doesn't erase all questions about changing consumer habits, it's a strong sign that Disney and Pixar haven't lost their magic touch. Their recent streaming push and a few box office stumbles might have caused some concern, but this movie proves they can still deliver the kind of high-quality films that have captivated audiences for generations https://cnb.cx/4cqBqB7 #insideout2 #pixar #disney #movies #boxoffice #theaters #streaming

If hollywood wants to make more money, I suggest they stop with all the hardcore foul language, extreme violence, gore, graphic sex, and making movies with no morals. I make it a point NOT to watch these movies.

What happens when you don't cram an agenda down our throats. I bought 5 tickets yesterday (3 kids)... I haven't allowed my family to go to many movies lately because we don't want to expose them to certain ideas yet. Went and saw Mario TWICE in theaters for this reason. Hopefully the shareholders at Disney will start demanding story telling and not politicization of their products.

Why? It was a great storyline with great characters, and it didn't do all this other garbage that Disney has been doing lately to lead to the failure of the film. I saw 0 and I mean 0 negative pre-reviews for the movie, unlike the other 10 Disney films that have been eviscerated on YouTube. I think we are going to take the kids to see it. The last movie I saw in the theatre was Ghostbusters: Frozen Kingdom (good solid movie). Then it was Wonka which I very much enjoyed. Disney has always been able to do this they have chosen not to. They need something after the unmitigated destruction of The Acolyte has tanked again. Iger does not have what it takes to fix Disney or Star Wars. The Walt Disney Company I will do Igers job for half of what he is doing it and get you guys fixed in 5 years.

Ticket purchases derive from expectations. Audiences don't know the content until they've seen the movie. Ergo, a ticket purchase is not necessarily a validaton of the content. Word of mouth, audience and critic reviews, and repeat viewings may be. Other factors come into play. How swelteringly hot was it last weekend, and how air conditioned were the theaters? How many people research a movie before seeing it vs. pick it as they stand before the marquee with showtimes at the box office? I've witnessed a lot of the latter.

Nicely said! Nonetheless, my grand kids, at their parent's request, will not be watching anything from Disney or Pixar for that matter until they stop all the social programming in the content. However, not to be intolerant perhaps a new rating system that accurately informs the parents what is in the movie is the way to go. I cannot say that one has a Right to raise their children the way they want all the while forbidding a particular way of doing so. Do whatever floats your boat in your home, just do not force or coerce me into participating in your lunacy.

"Hey ChatGPT, summarize the box office performance of Inside Out 2, in the style of a long LinkedIn post. Keep my stance on why the other movies have underperformed as vague as possible, but do make sure to include at least 3 or 4 movie puns. Don't worry if the puns don't make sense or if they seem forced". - you

Maybe it's the subject matter that matters most? Is anxiety in children and all something that the world is working on now? https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/14/well/mind/inside-out-2-anxiety.html#:~:text=In%20the%20movie%2C%20Anxiety%20can,important%20part%20of%20our%20identity.

This bodes well for Despicable Me 4, which releases on July 3rd. That's the one my family is looking forward to and we've already pre-purchased tickets for 12 to accommodate friends and extended family. Only 2 major animated releases this summer though?
