“When did you decide to be a coach?” Honestly, I didn’t. If anything, when I first started my cosch training, I vehemently said, “The unit economics sucks! I’m gonna keep doing product consulting on the side and make my money there. But I’ll keep training cos I love these skills.” Not long after it was clear as day… Product consulting made me a good chunk of money and brought me little joy. Coaching made me (back then) very little money but brought me so much joy. Soon after I realized I wasn’t doing anything else but coaching. That’s when I got the message from the ether, “You’re doing the world a disservice if you don’t do this.” Wow. It felt like the universe saying this is what I were always meant to do. So I’m not sure if it were ever a decision I made. It felt more like that got decided for me a long time ago. And that oddly feels good. Feels good to know that this is what I’m gonna be doing even when I’m 80 (and hopefully beyond). I can just focus on honing my craft and getting better and better at what I do. What I was meant to do. So no I didn’t really decide. The universe called. I answered. There’s also been so much research about human relationships being the biggest predictors for success, happiness, and even health and longevity. Often when my clients show up, they’re talking about career and leadership. When they leave, they talk about how it has changed their relationships. ‘Relationships’ is not how I usually “market” my work. But relationships is everything! * If you want to get better at building strong, authentic relationships, * If you want to learn how to lead entire teams and systems of people through relationships, * If you want to feel more at ease and like you belong whoever you’re with, then we might want to work together. I’m getting very full with some big new projects but will always do my best to make space for folks who are highly committed to “doing the work”. “Torture them into greatness.” 😂 I find it incredibly hard to give up on people too. Good thing I’m a coach today. I’ll say the one caveat is this - As we’re not giving up on people, Let’s help them succeed in the areas that they *want* to succeed, and were *meant* to succeed. There’s pride in learning how to overcome something that’s not natural for a person. It’s easier when we simply reorient them to what they’re naturally good at. The most important - and the biggest determinant of success - is that it’s meaningful for them. “You have a nice voice.” My Grab driver complimented me as I got out of his car. I’d been singing along to his playlist the whole ride cos he was doing my favourite love songs! 🥰 I’m not vocally gifted by any means (no this is not me beating myself up). What I am though… is caring much less what others think of me these days. I no longer sing to impress. I sing because I want to. I sing because it makes me happy. Maybe it’s getting older. Maybe it’s learning to care less what others think. Maybe it’s learning to prioritize my own joy and what makes me happy. Probably all of the above. Last year I had an inclination that I wanted to sing. So I simply *let* myself sing. And yes I am a much better singer today as a result. Maybe singing lessons next year? Cos why not. Super fun panel on the #futureofwork with Global Shapers Community, supported by World Economic Forum. Loved sharing the stage with Cindy Ngiam, Bucky Hussain, and Richard Koh. So much gold. Celest Wu, Johanna Dy Juanco big thanks for inviting and putting this together (phenomenal moderating!), Cherilyn Tan for nominating me. We had a diverse audience from students to white hairs. So bowled over by the passion, ambition, maturity, and awareness of the young folks I met! Can’t get away from talking about AI of course. Also pleasantly surprised so much came down to attitude. Leadership skills never go out of style. ;) This was doubly fun cos I took it as an opportunity to get better at public speaking, which I’ve wanted to do for a while. :D Special shoutout 📣 to Kamil Haque for helping me become a better speaker in just 1 session!
