Marc Lasry, Avenue Capital’s Co-Founder and CEO, discusses investing in sports and the opportunity across different leagues. He also describes the level of engagement being seen across women’s sports – a growth story that’s just beginning. A recent example being the national championship basketball game between South Carolina Gamecocks and Iowa Hawkeyes which had a record 18.9 million people tune in for the game (real time engagement), a 90 percent increase from the 2023 title game and a 289 percent increase from 2022. This level of fan engagement is expected to drive ongoing explosive growth for women’s sports and monetization of that engagement. https://lnkd.in/g8EFkb5y

🏀For the first time ever, I convinced my daughter to watch a basketball game with me before bed. The Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark were playing. Did I think she knew who Caitlin was? No—she’s only 8! But then she said, “There’s Caitlin Clark!” My jaw dropped. I was so happy she knew who she was watching. When I asked, “What do you know about Caitlin Clark?” she replied, “She’s one of the best basketball players in the world.” 🥹 🚀 The power of brand and storytelling is undeniable, and recent events in the WNBA highlight this perfectly. The incredible success and growing hype around rookie stars like Angel Reese, Caitlin Clark, and Cameron Brink illustrate how captivating narratives can capture attention and inspire millions. These athletes aren’t just making headlines for their on-court performances; they’re creating compelling stories that resonate far beyond the sports world. Their journeys, personalities, and relentless drive are building powerful personal brands that attract fans, media, and sponsors alike. In today’s competitive landscape, it’s hard to deny that attention is the most valuable currency. By combining exceptional talent with authentic storytelling, these athletes are demonstrating how a strong personal brand can elevate an entire league and inspire the next generation of stars. #Branding #Storytelling #WNBA #Marketing #AthleteBranding

Traditionally, ownership of sports leagues has been dominated by a select group of individuals, often distant from the blood, sweat, and tears shed by athletes on the field. But times are changing, and the narrative is evolving. The understanding that nobody comprehends the intricacies of the sports industry quite like those who've lived and breathed it is gaining traction. Former athletes possess a unique perspective — they've been in the trenches, they've faced adversity, tasted victory, and know the game inside out. Their transition into ownership brings fresh insights and empathy that could revolutionize how sports leagues are run. However, the path to ownership hasn't been accessible to all athletes. Only a privileged few have historically had the opportunity to join ownership groups after retiring. This exclusivity has left many individuals on the sidelines, unable to contribute their valuable insights to the game's future. But winds of change are sweeping through the sports world. In a recent conversation, NRFL Managing Director, Steve Ryan, and former National Football League (NFL) player and current General Manager of 73 Holdings LLC, Garrick Jones, discuss athlete ownership and the NRFL's mission to democratize ownership in sports. The surge in enterprise values, with the aggregate hitting $216 billion, is not just a testament to the growing financial allure of sports teams but also underscores the strategic shift towards diversified sports empires. The Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment's monumental leap post-acquisition of the Washington Commanders exemplifies how strategic investments can significantly elevate a company's market position. It's also the broader implications that catch my attention. The merging of traditional sports business with new revenue models, from mixed-use real estate to digital distribution channels, signals a shift in how sports entities are viewed - not just as teams, but as comprehensive entertainment platforms. This evolution speaks volumes about the future of sports management and investment, and it's a wake-up call for anyone in this space to rethink and innovate. #SportsInvesting #SportsTech

Sport is a part of culture & conversation. It plays a big part in people’s identity. It’s inspiring & relatable at the same time. And it’s the only form of media that you can’t forward to see how it ends. We’re starting to see a lot of interest in sports as an asset class. It’s not just the billionaires anymore. Institutional investors, including private equity firms and hedge funds are throwing their hats in the ring. But why will someone want to invest? 1. Scarcity - There is a limited number. And there’s always someone who wants to buy a sports team. That means the valuation will keep increasing, and all other assets will follow that new valuation. 2. Distribution - Sport gets the most eyeballs that transcend geography & race. It gives you a global and diverse fan base, but also a very strong local audience. It can act as a catalyst to other businesses and agendas. 3. Aggregation - Sport gives you access to markets that are difficult to access. Since it’s so diverse and global, different facets of sports attract different audiences. Investing in sports should be looked at from a scarcity, distribution and aggregation lens. That’s when it makes the most sense. #sports #sportsbiz #sportsbusiness

Sports as an asset class continues to be dominant. Back in 2019, the Major League Baseball (MLB) first opened its door to institutional investments in the world of Sports. Two-thirds of the Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Basketball Association (NBA) teams are now Private Equity backed. Over the last thirty year the value of team franchises have grown double digit CAGR predominately driven by scarcity, media right deals, and deepened consumer engagement. Sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, and private equity funds are going to be allocating capital aggressively in Sports one way or another. There is a massive opportunity that awaits rights-holders, media entities, and sponsors to leverage the surging interest in women's sports. https://lnkd.in/d4qMk46s
