Journalists & comms professionals, Hood College recently created a Communication Arts Advisory Board to help shape the types of courses the department should offer undergrads. I am delighted to announce the publication of an impactful article by my esteemed colleagues, Alexander Averin and Jason Vranes from Liberty University. As we’re considering student pathways, an important part is helping students make connections in the field where they want to work. This is an area that amplifies inequities, as students with country club connections have an advantage over first-gen college students. What can we do at the college level to help forge those connections?

This week was #nationalteacherappreciationweek, so Stephanie Pryor sat down (virtually) with Carrie Vioral Sipes, chairperson and associate professor at Shippensburg University Communication, Journalism and Media Department, to talk about teaching the next generation of media leaders and what inspired her to pursue a career in academia. Marketers, if you’re looking for something new, or to make a positive change, teaching might be the right fit. The good news: you don’t even have to get your doctoral degree! Start by reaching out to local universities to join mentorship programs, guest speak in classes/student groups, or become an adjunct professor.   *Almost* none of us would be where we are today if it weren’t for the teachers who prepared us for our careers. Consider giving back by using your real-world experience to lead future generations of marketers. It's always a thrill to come back to Stanford and talk to current students. I had a blast talking about careers in pro sports and some of the lessons I've learned along my own journey. I also shared what I think are three interesting research topics for students interested in breaking into the industry right now-- if I were still on campus, I would try to learn as much as I could about these, especially the first. Resharing here, would be curious what folks think about these. (1) Machine learning on skeletal tracking data. There is a flood of this class of data coming online in every sport -- how can we build end-to-end ML models that learn interesting structure from the raw data. (2) The interesting ways in which statistical models break down (ie. team misses 27 straight threes, data are not IID Bernoulli trials), and can we systematically learn anything from this beyond just explaining it away, "the model can't capture everything." (3) Induction and the assumption of the future being like the past -- this is at the heart of all predictive modeling, but in an era when team strategies are constantly being optimized, how can you avoid the unpleasant outcomes.
