As the global workforce and talent sourcing continues to evolve, Microsoft Leap is consistently expanding its global footprint and intentional effort to identify non-traditional talent in non-traditional spaces. Our Outreach and Recruitment team recently participated in a Career Fair in Dallas, Texas, hosted by the T.D. Jakes Foundation. Starting off as a panel discussion entitled “Disruptive Conversation: The future of AI, education, and the workforce,” the discussion emphasized the importance of re-skilling and evolving your skillset as the workforce itself evolves. With over 1400 in attendance, 90% of the event attendees were actively seeking employment, with 88% coming from underserved communities, and 65% identifying as female. Microsoft Leap’s goal is to eliminate barriers for untapped talent, to be able to access learning and employment opportunities, regardless of background. To achieve our mission, meet the demands of our customers, partners, and communities, we are committed to collaborating with non-traditional stakeholders and leveraging innovation, to increase opportunities for talented individuals passionate about technology. A special thank you to two of our Microsoft Leap alumni, Uche Oleru and Grace MacJones who both reside in Texas. They both shared their own personal journeys into the program and answered questions and connected with over five hundred individuals who are early in their careers. #microsoftleap #microsoftlife

Why are you interested in working for XYX company? I hate this question! The answer is: I’m not sure I even am yet 🤷🏻♀️ I applied because I need a job! And - 💡The job description appealed to me. ✅ I know I check most of the boxes and can do this job. 🧐 I’m preliminarily interested to the product or solution you offer. ———————————— ❓But am I interested in working for XYZ company? That remains to be seen. It depends on - 👯What is the company culture? 🕺What is the person like that I would report to? Can I see myself working for this person? 👫 How do I mesh with the team I would work with in my day to day? 😍 How is enablement viewed and valued by leadership? 📈 What does career progression look like for this role? 🗓️ How does the company handle the interview process? 💰What is the compensation compared to other opportunities I’m considering? 📋 And so many other factors. ———————————— (Initially) You’re choosing me based on one piece of paper and I’m choosing you based on the job posting and your website. We will both do our due diligence to decide if we’re a good fit. ———————————— How do you answer this when asked?

Do onsite recruiting events still make sense these days? We should reconsider the value of attending onsite recruiting events! Because digital recruiting events offer benefits like… ✅ Efficiency. No one has to travel. Apart from an environmental perspective, traveling also costs time and energy. This can turn out as an unnecessary obstacle for talents. ✅ Inclusiveness. Meeting in a digital space can turn out to be more inclusive. Not every talent is an event type. Plus, onsite events may have accessibility issues. ✅ Maximised match-likelihood. There are endless opportunities for designing a digital career event. Thanks to this, having interactions with matching people is way easier. My key learning from our first digital career event at envelio this year: 😅 Prepare tools or questions for moments of awkward silence Which benefits would you add to the list? [In the picture: My colleagues Julia Deling, Juliane Bednarz, Juliane M., and I at the RWTH Digital Career Event for Women II. We were hosting a Q&A breakout session for students.]

Landing a job is all about who you know. “Francisco Denis recently discovered that connections—or lack thereof—can make all the difference. He says he was a finalist for a project-manager role at Disney but was told by a recruiter that the company decided to hire someone who had worked there in the past and could plug in immediately.” Research suggests up to 80% of jobs are filled through personal connections. But, as The Wall Street Journal points out in this article, relying on this approach can reinforce demographic imbalances in the workforce and limit companies’ ability to tap into diverse, highly qualified candidate pools. Our model helps leading companies like Discover Financial Services and Fidelity Investments meet immediate talent needs and develop a pipeline of diverse, vetted candidates while expanding access to the essential work-based experiences that set students up for career success. One question I was often asked during the Lockdown period in 2020 by makeup students & makeup trainees was would it be more difficult to get into the film industry when filming was able to resume. My answer was always the same that I felt that broadcasting companies would introduce more trainee roles to help support film making & to build skilled teams. It was evident there would be a boom in film making & I felt there would be a need for more trainees. It has been the case consistently since 2020 & more companies have recognised they need to develop trainee positions to support the areas that are needing skilled teams. It is really encouraging to see these roles for trainees especially in the hair & makeup field.
