🌍 Thank you to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency for organising today’s impactful workshop on enhancing two-way communication with communities in emergency responses, focusing on #Sudan and #SouthSudan. 100+ participants, including many from CDAC Network, joined this important discussion. CDAC’s Programme Lead, Liz Hendry, shared insights on the critical role of networks and collaboration, reflecting on CDAC’s support to the Sudan regional response since the outbreak of violence last year. Key takeaways: 1️⃣ In South Sudan and Sudan, collective approaches are are the only way to address cross-border needs, fragmented information ecosystems, connectivity breakdowns, harmful information and lack of access and resources. 2️⃣ Collaboration builds trust, reduces confusion and tensions, and is essential for effective communication with communities. 3️⃣ Local actors, including media and diaspora, are vital and often on the front line of communication efforts. Their participation in decision-making is crucial. 4️⃣ There is still a pressing need to prioritise communication with communities, integrate it across all sectors and ensure it is well-resourced. 📢 Every organisation has a role to play to elevate the importance of communication: make it an agenda item, budget for activities, lobby for resources, reach out to local media and share success stories. #CommIsAid

We are excited to announce the completion of our latest project with Samuel Hall in #SouthSudan! 🌍 🚀 Together, we’ve conducted community-based data assessments across 4 regions in South Sudan. These regions were designated by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency as areas of relative stability where sustainable reintegration of returnees might be possible. Since the signing of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) in 2018, over 507,000 people have returned home. Recognizing the critical need for comprehensive data in these areas, Space4Good researched, retrieved and conducted a quality check on the currently freely available datasets and #geospatial indicators related to various factors such as environment, infrastructure, and economic opportunities to support #reintegration efforts, and investigated the data gaps. These datasets and discovered #data gaps will be the basis for further in-country research and community profiling. This initiative aligns with one of our Space4Good goals of facilitating #peace and resilience in conflict-affected regions.

Vikara Institute’s latest MSS2023 blog, written by DAI, throws light on a promising trend: the collaboration between market systems development (MSD) and humanitarian practitioners to amplify donor impact in challenging contexts such as refugee communities. By applying a systems lens, we're seeing market-based approaches successfully improve refugees' lives. However, considering the inherent vulnerability of these communities, minimizing market risks and protecting them from exploitation is paramount. Senior Regional Economic Inclusion Officer for Eastern Horn and Great Lakes Region in Africa at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency
The East and Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes (EHAGL) Region now hosts 5 million #refugees and asylum seekers in addition to 14.6 million internally displaced people (#IDPs). As we are confronted with an ever-growing population of forcibly displaced and stateless persons with increasing needs and shrinking humanitarian budgets, we are faced with the need to “do more with less.” In 2023, internal UNHCR assessments showed that around 66% of #refugees living in countries in EHAGL with limited or no access in practice to formal employment. Support private sector partners is key to find solutions for these populations and their hosting communities. We have listed here some examples on how #UNHCR in the region engages with the private sector both on fund-raising and on achieving social impact. Several experiences are highlighted in this briefing note including; 1) advocacy for improved legal frameworks for the private sector to engage formally with refugees; 2) collaboration with key partners such as multilateral banks and chambers of commerce as accelerators for scaled up work and livelihood opportunities; 3) cooperation with the private sector on social impact partnerships, including major events to raise awareness of the importance of private sector engagement; 4) engagement with private sector foundations; 5) sectorial specific engagement on key topics where innovation of the private sector and support is most needed. https://lnkd.in/dEdiCZJe

How to map diaspora organizations and their humanitarian response to a current crisis? Explore our DEMAC #pocketguide on how to #map and assess diaspora engagement. This pocket guide provides guidance and answers the following questions: Who are the diaspora responders, how and where do they respond and with which activities? Understanding the #context and pre-positioning the diaspora responders to develop a feasible, relevant and effective diaspora engagement plan, it is necessary to study and map the diaspora organizations actively involved in a specific humanitarian response. Potential steps include: 1️. Online media monitoring of diaspora humanitarian response 2. Semi-structured key informant interviews with humanitarian diaspora representatives & relevant stakeholders 3. Online survey for diaspora respondents active in the humanitarian response 4. Focus Group Discussions/Consultations with diaspora responders, diaspora local partners, diaspora beneficiaries 📚 This Pocket Guide is part of the DEMAC #Toolkit! It comprises ten concise and practical guides on #diaspora humanitarianism, with five specifically tailored for institutional humanitarian actors. 📖 Explore all the guides on our website to unlock valuable insights! https://lnkd.in/eiQBspqp #diasporaengagement #learninganddevelopment #humanitarianaid #coordination #mapping IOM United States Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp

Starting from July 13 and continuing until August 21 of this year, protection monitoring teams from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and IOM - UN Migration collected data by conducting in-person interviews with those who fled Ukraine after the 24th of February 2022 since the beginning of the escalation of the war in Ukraine. This data collection was conducted for the Multi-Sector Needs Assessment 2023. The Multi-Sector Needs Assesment (MSNA) for Poland is part of a regional interagency multi-sectoral assessment, seeking to capture and understand: the needs of refugees, the level of access to basic services, and how refugees’ needs are met, service gaps and refugees’ priorities for the coming year. The MSNA serves as a pivotal source of information for the 2024 Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRP), which outlines the priorities and funding requirements for all humanitarian actors involved in the response. Throughout the data collection process, our teams conducted interviews with 5,645 households, encompassing over 13,420 refugees residing in metropolitan and rural areas across 16 regions (voivodeships). These refugees reside in various types of accommodations, including private residences, with host families, rentals, hostels/hotels, and collective sites. This comprehensive assessment, with a solid sample representation, provides a detailed overview of various aspects of the lives of the refugees from Ukraine in Poland. I am very proud of contributing to every stage of this project, from timeline planning, developing and coding questionnaire, conducting and coordinating data collection in different cities, towns, and villages across Poland, to the subsequent data analysis for publication and dissemination. It has been an invaluable opportunity for learning new skills and understanding the significance of well-organized assessments in guiding future data-driven planning. I am grateful to everyone involved in this endeavor, especially the monitors who worked diligently in the field to ensure its success. https://lnkd.in/excKU8M5

The golden nugget of systemic thinking does not/shouldn't limit itself to MSD, but extends to the whole spectrum of implicancies of project management. As we dive into it, the opportunities for genuine stakeholder inclusion and voice the unvoiced are becoming more real. #systemic #approach #development

Leading up to #WorldRefugeeDay, we'd like to share what we've learned about funding refugee-led organizations. Refugee-led organizations (RLOs) play a vital role in the refugee response sector. They have deep experience with the problems facing their own communities and expertise on what works and what doesn’t. Yet, there is a widespread failure to properly fund the RLOs doing some of the most important and effective work on the front lines of these crises.
