What are the new Dutch government's priorities for energy and the fight against climate change? Bianca van Zijderveld, Senior Manager at Accuracy, examines the new program as the cabinet led by Prime Minister Dick Schoof takes office. In terms of energy, the new administration has announced several changes in direction, notably reducing the emphasis on renewable energies compared to the ambitions of the previous government. Instead, they are placing significant emphasis on nuclear power to achieve goals of decarbonisation and energy independence. This approach could involve the construction of up to four new nuclear power plants and substantial investment in small modular reactors (SMRs). Is this a direction that will pay off? Time will tell. Commercial nuclear power generation in the United States commenced in 1958. By August 1, 2023, the country was home to 93 operational nuclear reactors spread across 54 power plants in 28 different states. In 2022, the number of operable reactors increased to 437, up by one from the previous year. Most of these reactors are pressurized water reactors (PWRs), with almost all 36 reactors starting between 2018 and 2022 being PWRs. It is essential to remember this when considering nuclear power's role in helping the European Union achieve its climate and energy security objectives. The European Nuclear Alliance has an interesting perspective on how nuclear power and renewable energy can work together to achieve these goals. They recognize the potential benefits of both sources in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring a stable energy supply while promoting sustainability. However, three critical questions arise from this statement. Firstly, how important is nuclear energy as a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels in mitigating climate change? Secondly, what are the most viable and ethical solutions for storing and disposing of radioactive nuclear waste? Third, Asia has more than doubled and has overtaken nuclear generation in West & Central Europe, with three-quarters of the reactors under construction in the world. How might the shift in nuclear generation from Europe to Asia impact the energy mix and the economic and geopolitical dynamics between these regions and their global influence? #nuclearenergy #renewableenergy #policymaking #ethicalpractices

Small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) should play a key role in achieving net zero by 2050. Yet the cancellation in November 2023 of NuScale’s Carbon Free Power Project bore many of the hallmarks of failed large-scale nuclear plants of recent decades, not least rising costs. Is it a killer blow to this nascent energy segment or merely a road bump? Learn more at Wood Mackenzie! #renewableenergy #energynews #SmallModularReactor

☢️ This is where the future of nuclear energy is taking shape - First nuclear power plant of its kind, second chance for coal workers. Kemmerer, Wyoming. A small city of just over 2,000 souls, in the heart of the United States. Right next to the old Naughton coal power plant, now in the process of being decommissioned, Natrium is being built, the nuclear power plant that boasts the most advanced reactor in the world. 📌 https://lnkd.in/gYzTmiYg 📌https://lnkd.in/g3WfKazq To know more about cost effective solutions to net-zero emissions you can read my article below. 📌 Cost-Effective Innovations to Achieve Net Zero Emissions: https://lnkd.in/g6Fv-zcj If you're interested in staying updated with the latest insights and expertise in technology and innovation, I highly recommend following David Soldani on LinkedIn. Not so actually dear Ted! This morning you shared how the #Coalition intends to delay renewables for as long as it could using #Nuclear as an excuse to stifle money flow to renewables while fossil fuels rape and pillage. #Renewables are the cheapest form of energy NOW. And with #Batteries the most reliable as the #SouthAustralian example has patently proved. Inconvenient facts....... No delays for Nuclear promise are required. But the truth is that you have not found a way to control renewable money flows to create a quasi-monopoly for your vested interests like you can do with #FossilFuels and Nuclear, or even #hydrogen!
This morning I shared the Coalition's plan for cheaper, cleaner, and consistent energy at the Australian Clean Energy Summit. Australia is the only nation in the top 20 advanced economies that isn’t already using zero-emissions nuclear energy or moving towards it. It’s time that we too embraced zero-emissions nuclear energy to solve for our energy needs.
