Yesterday was official #EarthDay2024 – the day that reminds us all of our extraordinary planet and its people, and even more so of the need for us to come together to take action to protect and preserve. #GlobalCompactDenmark couldn’t have chosen a better day for their annual conference on ‘Fremtidens bæredygtighed & ESG' (The future of sustainability and ESG) – a full programme dedicated to the important role companies play when it comes to moving #ForwardFaster and most importantly, turn pledges into progress. For me, the most important take-aways were actually around two types of ‘forward’: #forwardthinking and #forwarddoing. Futurist #JonasGisselMikkelsen introduced ‘foresight’ as the new competence companies need to develop. Which makes total sense. Thinking about the future in the plural – as different scenarios – will not only boost change readiness but also trigger creativity and innovation. The flavour of forward thinking presented by Anne Bjerre Johansen, Elise Sydendal, Viktoria Windfeld Hinge from #DenGrønneUngdomsbevægelse (the Green Student Movement) was refreshingly radical. Their vision for ‘the workplace of the future’ was next generation in every sense of the word. Redefining what a sustainable company looks like, what value creation really means – and leaving us with the question: Is your company inventing needs or meeting them? When it comes to ‘forward doing’, Louise Koch from #Grundfos and Lene Bjørn Serpa from #Maersk generously opened their toolbox, showing us what they’d done to anchor sustainability in the organisations. How to organise and how to get people outside sustainability engaged is absolutely critical to turn talk into action. But that's not to say we shouldn't talk. Christina Blak nailed this important point in her presentation on how critical communication is as an enabler when it comes to turning ESG commitments into action and effecting real change: "Data documents. Communication motivates." (my translation). To the entire #GlobalCompactDenmark team, thanks for a great day! #FremtidensESG #GlobalCompactDenmark Steffen Max Høgh Sara Krüger Falk Jacob Barnes Jens Steen Larsen Adam Kaveney Bert Preece
