- [Instructor] Windows Deployment Services, called WDS for short, allows for remote, network-based installations of many editions of Windows, as well as some third-party O/Ss. It automates many of the processes required to install and set up new systems, making configuring multiple new systems in large environments easier and faster than trying to perform these tasks one at a time. WDS is a server role in 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 and beyond, and is included as an optional component of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2. WDS can be used to install most Windows operating systems, including those from Windows Vista and up, and Windows Server 2008, 2012, and 2016. WDS is almost always configured and deployed in large corporations using an existing Active Directory configuration in a domain network, although there are standalone options.
