- There's a joke among project managers that the first 90% of project work takes 90% of the time and the last 10% of work takes another 90% of the time. In other words, we often overestimate the work that we've done and underestimate the work that we have left to do. That leads to missed deadlines and budget overruns. That leads us to the fourth element of the DIRECT framework, executing the plan. The project plan is really just a guess about how the work of the project will get done, but it can't take into account all of the things that can go wrong. Let's look at five things we can do while we're executing a project to make sure that things go according to the plan, or to get us back on track when an issue arises.
