SharePoint permissions: The Basics

In SharePoint Online, permissions are used to enforce security. First, a quick overview statement. You can only view things that you have permission to view. For example, if there is a site that I have no permission to view because it's private and I am not a member, then when I search in SharePoint, I won't see any search results that come from that site. So permissions restrict what you can see and what you can edit, and where you can post or upload documents. There are six built-in SharePoint permission levels. Three of them are associated with built-in groups that are used by default on team sites. We have site owners that use the full control permission level, site members, and that group is created and then assigned to the edit permission level, and site visitors are assigned the read permission level.
