How to negotiate an internal promotion or new role

- Imagine you're at your current company and a new internal role opens up. You read the job description and you want to move forward with applying. Do the same negotiation principles apply? Mm, mostly. The only differences are, one, you know the internal culture and people in the organization; and two, the organization knows your salary, so you don't need to deflect. Similar to job searching externally, you don't need to be anchored to your current salary, as the new role has a new skillset and responsibilities that dictate its own market value. So let's illustrate this scenario with the senior paralegal example being offered a paralegal manager position within the same company. The company already knows my salary, but that doesn't preclude me from inquiring about what level this role is budgeted at internally, or what salary range they've approved.
