- In this section, I'd like to talk about virtual storage and by this, I mean, two different topics. One is the file types. The kinds of files used in virtualization. and also the file systems, the underlying structure of the physical disc in our host machines. First, let's talk about the file types. These are the extensions you'll see, on the end of a file, of all the files used as part of a virtual machine, different hypervisors like to use different file types. Some of the more common are V-D-I, V-H-D-X, V-M-D-K, and H-D-D. If two hypervisors use the same file type that implies there's a high degree of compatibility between the two hypervisors. And it would be fairly easy to share virtual machines between the two. However, most hypervisors use a different file type than all of their competitors. And therefore it can be somewhat challenging to share a virtual machine built on one hypervisor that you try and open…
