- In this section, I'd like to talk about some different options on storage. Most of the storage hardware on the market today falls into one of three categories. Either direct attached storage, DAS. Network attached storage, NAS or often pronounced nas, and storage area network, SAN or commonly annunciated as san. First, we'll talk about direct attached storage and that is basically your local hard drive. We can have one or more local hard drives in every machine and we also could attach some external hard drives if it is physically external to a machine, but still only connected to one machine that's typically still called direct attached storage. This is only appropriate for a small amount of guest machines. It is the cheapest, easiest method of storage and to be honest, I use this myself at home.
