From the course: Learning LinkedIn Recruiter

Use InMail

- [Narrator] The most common way to contact candidates is by using InMail. InMails allow you to message people on LinkedIn that you otherwise might not be able to. You likely have a set amount of InMails that you can use with your recruiter account, but whether or not you'll need to use one to message a candidate depends on a couple of things. So I currently have this message window open where I've composed a message to Jess, who is a candidate. And if you look to the right of her name, it says, free to InMail. So in this case, I'm not using one of my allotted InMails. Basically, if the candidate your messaging is a first degree connection, or if they're an OpenLink member, or if they're a job applicant, you'll be able to send them a message without using InMail. And if you look over here to the left, you can see Jess is a first degree connection. So that's why I'm not using up one of my InMails in this case. But if the person you're trying to contact is a second or third degree connection, which most will be, you'll have to use one of your allotted InMails to get in touch with them. The system is basically in place to keep people from sending unlimited messages or spamming other users from their accounts. Now, if the person you send an InMail to replies or denies the message within 90 days, you will receive that InMail credit back. I'm just going to close that for now. And by the way, you can always check how many credits you have left by going to your photo in the upper right-hand corner, selecting product settings, and here you'll see your InMail credits under usage overview. Also, it's important to be aware that LinkedIn members can opt out of receiving InMail messages using their personal settings. So if you come across a profile where there's no option to send a message, it's likely that that member isn't open to receiving InMails. So keep track of the amount of InMail messages that you have and use them wisely to reach out to candidates that you otherwise wouldn't be able to.
