- At some point in our working lives, every one of us will require time off of work to deal with a sickness or a medical condition. But the US is the only developed country without a national policy on paid sick days. In Iceland, workers are actually provided a hundred percent of pay two days for every week of work if needed. Without some sort of protection for workers, companies do risk employees working while sick, causing significant damage to others in the workplace and in the community, as the most recent COVID pandemic highlighted. In the US, some companies will offer some sort of paid time to attract and retain employees. However, research shows that the highest paid workers can receive paid sick leave, but the lowest paid workers have less access to that same benefit. So, what is sick leave exactly?
