- [Instructor] Flow diagrams have been used for a very long time to visualize things like org charts, database diagrams, and business processes. They are such mainstays in business communications that they've become the platform for an entire category of memes. Whether self-referential flow charts like this one, or flows that help with the decision-making. Flows can depict many concepts. One brings us back to change over time. This diagram isn't really a traditional flow diagram, it's a classic visual that appeared in a statistical atlas from the United States from 1890. Starting in 1790 on the right-hand side, which is strange, it's a good best practice these days to always flow from left to right when dealing with time. But what we see on the right-hand side there is the top population centers in the United States, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Charleston, Baltimore, et cetera.
