- You're not alone if you're wondering about how the product owner role came to be. After all there is no major in college titled product owner and it's rarely an entry-level job. So what is a product owners background? Product owners come from a variety of places in the organization, and much depends on the type of organization and what type of product is being built. Let's look at what roles and backgrounds many product owners come from. In these descriptions, you may see yourself or colleagues and in turn realize how each can successfully contribute to product ownership goals of the team. The first and most common is from business lines or business units. If the product being built is for internal users of the organization, the product owner may be a leader process owner, or analyst who can represent the users of the solution.
