Youth Justice Facilitator

The Youth Justice Facilitator has a key role in leading the Juvenile Justice Youth Advisory Board. The Youth Advisory Board empowers youth who have been involved in the juvenile justice system to advocate for change and positively impact their communities. Youth Advisory Board members work closely with the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, participating in leadership development activities and serving as ambassadors for youth who are or have been involved in the juvenile justice system.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Two to three years working with older youth/young adults (13-24) and their parents
  • One year of advocacy-related work within the criminal justice system (youth or adult systems)
  • Understanding of adolescent development & general positive youth development concepts & strategies
  • High energy and ability to connect with justice-involved youth.
  • Lived experience with the juvenile justice system strongly preferred
  • Strong passion for community service and youth advocacy
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Ability to establish community partnerships
  • Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office software
  • Access to reliable transportation

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and organize topics for youth to learn advocacy & other leadership skills
  • Facilitate bi-monthly meetings with youth on given topics, including restorative justice circles and discussions with staff from HCJPD
  • Maintain regular contact with youth outside of meetings to provide guidance and support to youth board members, helping them navigate challenges and maximize their impact
  • Assist in finding resources for youth who face additional barriers to participation
  • Coordinate youth travel to and from meetings
  • Manage logistics for meetings, including food, location, and other aspects
  • Collaborate with the Youth Advisory Board to ensure the smooth execution of projects and initiatives
  • Develop and maintain strong connections within the community to create opportunities for youth
  • Some travel required to various locations throughout the city to visit community organizations to facilitate advisory meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Display professional appearance in accordance with agency policy
  • Handle difficult situations in a discreet manner.
  • Maintain attendance within the limits of agency guidelines
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding client information.
  • Attend agency and staff meetings, and in-service trainings, as scheduled.
