Job Summary

The Office of the Provost is seeking a Vice Provost for Academic Affairs to provide administrative oversight and support to the division for academic affairs. The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs will serve as a liaison who is primarily responsible for assisting the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs will assist with matters pertaining to faculty affairs to include assessing academic performance, excellence in teaching and learning, scholarship, and contributions to the university and community. The Vice Provost will facilitate the academic and student affairs strategic plan ensuring alignment with the university strategic plan and institutional goals . This role is also responsible for academic compliance, policy and procedures, and developing initiatives for measuring student learning outcomes and student success.

The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs serves as personnel liaison primarily responsible for assisting the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs with matters pertaining to the faculty, such as the recruitment process, the retention, promotion and tenure processes, faculty grievances, student complaints, disciplinary procedures, financial aspects, budget allocations as well as budget request and approvals.

The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs serves as deputy to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a key member of the Academic Affairs leadership team, helping to coordinate the planning efforts for the Academic Affairs division, fostering a student-centered environment supporting the active learning engagement of all students . The role of Vice Provost also assist the Provost and Vice President with resource matters and personnel. He/she provides key oversight for the Academic Affairs staff as directed by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Essential Job Functions

The Vice Provost of Academic Affairs will provide direct, high-level administrative and office support in the Office of the Provost and Vice Provost of Academic Affairs. The ideal candidate must have:

  • Ability to assume new and other responsibilities on own initiative and execute them in an effective manner as necessary.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the office as well as with other internal constituents (senior administration, faculty, staff) and interact professionally with external constituents (students, parents, alumni and the public).
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment when making decisions as well as functioning calmly and effectively during times of crisis.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and tact; maintain composure and competence under pressure; and be detail oriented. Must be able to prioritize essential tasks, have initiative, be self-directed with good decision-making skills; and have the capacity to be a strong team player.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including correspondence writing, meeting note-taking, and professional presentation development.
  • Exercise considerable judgement, initiative and discretion based on knowledge of university policies and procedures and working collegially with an administrative team.
  • Exercise the highest standard of confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism in all duties.
  • Problem-solving skills required in discerning when and how to re-route or solve issues that can be handled at a lower level first and know when issues need the immediate attention of the Provost .
  • Strong organizational skills, tact, and creativity; attention to detail; efficiency in handling problems; coordinating and reviewing budgets; handling several tasks simultaneously and sometimes unexpectedly; working in a fast-paced environment; and commitment to completing tasks to the highest standards.
  • Consults with the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs to formulate long-and short-range plans and strategies to meet institutional retention and graduation goals.
  • Supervises centers’ staff in delivery of services to students.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure a positive, proactive, professional, efficient, and effective office environment, and will be proactive in simplifying systems, increasing use of university enterprise software, and reducing paperwork.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Student Affairs, including administrators, faculty/ advisors and professional staff.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Experience developing key performance indicators for personnel.
  • Sensitivity to economic, cultural, and other issues relating to persistence of a diverse student body.
  • Thorough understanding of retention and persistence best practices in higher education.
  • Outstanding supervisory skills.

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree from an accredited university and progressive and successful experience in academic leadership, teaching, and advising.
  • Exemplary scholarly and professional achievement, as evidenced by recent peer reviewed publications, grantsmanship, and/or scholarly presentations.
  • Experience in developing and communicating a vision for student success, inspiring others with that vision, and work collaboratively and creatively to articulate that vision in a strategic planning process.
  • Record of relevant research and scholarship success and the ability to lead complex organizations.
  • Record of teaching, research, and service in a college/university environment.
  • Experience in evaluating faculty credentials and qualifications.
  • Experience in developing Title III proposal and activities.
  • Experience in tracking international employment visa process.
  • Experience in facilitating promotion and tenure activities.
  • Experience in creating innovative faculty development opportunities.
  • Experience in managing university-wide standing committees.
  • Experience in teaching and advising on undergraduate and graduate levels.

Working Conditions

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required .
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
