Special Investigator, Violent Crimes Case Reduction Unit

The Attorney General's Office is not a law enforcement agency. This law enforcement position is an investigator in a legal office.

The Violent Crimes Case Reduction Unit (VCCRU) partners with the General and Special Prosecution section of the Criminal Division to combat the backlog of violent crimes in circuits around the state. Investigators will focus on assisting attorneys in moving violent crimes in a specific circuit, heavily emphasizing trial work. Investigators interested in this position should be comfortable preparing murders, sexual assaults, and other violent crimes for trial in a condensed time frame. Support will be provided to accommodate the condensed time frame. Under limited supervision, investigates criminal prosecution cases as assigned by the supervising attorney and Deputy Attorney General, focusing on Violent Crime cases and trial preparation. Gathers evidence and assists in organizing and presenting findings.

  • Work as a team member with prosecution unit attorneys to assess cases and determine what assistance can be provided.
  • Interview potential witnesses and suspects and procure necessary physical, documentary, or other evidence. Document the progress of the investigation. Maintain files and evidence for assigned investigations. Maintain a high level of organization to ensure that investigations are completed.
  • Coordinate administrative details of witness interviews, evidence collection, and personal arrangements for required out-of-town travel.
  • Handles inquiries regarding cases and investigations within the office.
  • Assist prosecutors in trial preparation.
  • Review digital forensics, jail communications, and financial and social media searches related to cases. Help secure materials when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising investigator, Attorney General, Chief Deputy Attorney General, or other supervising attorneys.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and at least ten years of experience conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties.

Necessary Requirements: Candidate must have SC Criminal Justice Class One certification or another state's equivalent certification.

Additional Requirements

  • This position may require overnight travel.
  • This position may require the employee to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • This position requires up-to-date certification(s).
  • This position may require you to travel to court and transport files.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference for experience in digital forensics and social media.
  • Have sound research and presentation skills, maturity, and diplomacy in communicating with others.
  • Well organized and able to work independently.
  • Require overnight travel.
  • Investigative experience.
  • Supervision by supervisor to review schedule, approaches to issues, findings, and written reports.
  • Because of the maturity and judgment required of the incumbent, the employee is expected to make the supervisor aware of any problems, issues, or suggestions relating to duties or assignments.
