Special Education Teacher for Global Skills

Position

Lincoln Street School in Exeter is in need of a certified special education teacher. This position services students with multiple disabilities with behavioral, communication, and significant academic needs. The position requires an individual who is adept at implementing behavior plans. The successful candidate will demonstrate familiarity with reading, writing, and math instruction for students performing well below grade level. Experience working with students with significant communication impairments is required and experience with AAC and discrete trial training is also required. This position is responsible for case management duties including conducting progress monitoring, creating IEPs, presenting at special education team meetings, and collaborating with related services staff, classroom teachers, and parents to provide students with a meaningful learning experience.

Under the direct supervision of Special Education Administrator and Building Principal

Essential Functions

  • Works with students individually and in small groups to provide specialized instruction as ordered in an IEP.
  • Conducts assessments, testing and diagnostic examinations of students for the purpose of identifying learning issues, and recommending courses of action or corrective procedures
  • Develops Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) and behavior plans for students.
  • Assists students and teaching staff in implementing students' IEPs.
  • Develops behavior plans, trains staff on implementation, tracks success of those plans.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping.
  • Ensures effective communication with students, staff, and parents.
  • Assists students with special needs to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement of IEP objectives.
  • Develops plans to maximize student independence with activities of daily living for the purpose of permitting the students to participate in school or learning activities.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information.

Must become trained in Crisis Prevention Intervention

Equipment

  • AAC devices and communication software including Touch Chat
  • Familiarity with gait trainers, standers, wheelchairs
  • Use standard office equipment, such as personal computers and copiers

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.
  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.
  • Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students with special needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
  • Prior experience working with special needs children desirable.
  • Ability to respond effectively to students when they are dysregulated.
