Job Description

NBC News is looking for an experienced senior producer to join its Investigative Unit. This role will report to the Executive Editor of Investigations. Responsibilities include developing original, in-depth reporting, and regular weekly stories for daily news programs. The ideal candidate is a strong editorial leader who has worked across multiple mediums and can find and develop investigations connected to the news cycle. The senior producer should also have a keen understanding of stories that will resonate beyond the news cycle. The ideal candidate can think visually and creatively, turning complex investigations into compelling video, engaging text and multimedia. They should also be comfortable producing flash investigations, enterprise reporting, crash assignments and have a zeal for breaking news in a competitive news environment.

This role requires experience directly managing a team of producers and associate producers. The senior producer must also have deep experience in reporting and producing and working across platforms, teams, and bureaus. Strong script writing and attention to detail are crucial, as well as strong news judgment, journalistic ethics, and a strong story sense. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success producing original, high-impact, award-winning short-form work.

The investigative unit works with all platforms within the NBC News group, so the ability to work collaboratively is a must. Abilities in data journalism, shooting, and video editing are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop investigations for the many shows and platforms within the NBCU News Group.
  • Report and produce both in-depth and flash investigative stories for television, cable and streaming.
  • Pitch and develop stories, write scripts and oversee edits.
  • Field produce video stories, working with correspondents and crews.
  • Supervise and help train a small team of producers and/or APs, including helping them develop stories, improve script writing and editing of stories.
  • Ability to spot key news moments with deeper storytelling potential and determine best execution of that story.
  • Text writing, fact-checking and copy editing when necessary.
  • Maintain timely understanding of current events and ongoing coverage on NBC News platforms.
  • Develop robust working relationships with editorial leaders across the NBCU News Group to help identify the strongest stories.
  • This position has been designated as hybrid, based in 30 Rock, with a minimum of 3 days per week in office.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of relevant working experience
  • Must have experience directly managing producers
  • Minimum 10 years experience producing longer-length, multimedia, high-impact video for a major news organization
  • Minimum 3 years overseeing complex news stories and overseeing the team assigned to produce them
  • Strong news judgment and excellent writing, research, interviewing and communication skills
  • Strong field production experience working under long lead time or deadline pressure
  • Able and willing to work flexible hours, under tight deadline pressure, including breaking news
  • Must be willing to travel as needed
  • Must be willing to work in NYC
