Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Director Strategic Marketing and New Business Development to join our $800 Million+ Life Sciences business. This will be a hybrid position and can report to either our Wilmington, DE, or Bridgewater, NJ location for in-office hours. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and commercial function. This position will report to the SVP and GM, Life Sciences.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as a key member of the Life Sciences senior leadership team and share responsibility for division-wide business priorities.
  • Identify, develop, and drive key strategic initiatives to enable profitable growth for the Life Science business.
  • Develop, implement, and update a comprehensive strategic plan to increase revenues and profits. Lead and own pharma long-term strategic agenda.
  • Identify and assess potential business opportunities utilizing market research, business intelligence, competitive and scientific analysis and pursue/maximize opportunities with the end goal of growing revenue and increasing profitability and market share.
  • Identify, recommend, and coordinate merger & acquisitions targets and coordinate the integration of new acquisitions into the existing portfolio.
  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of strategic marketers and new business development specialists to cover Pharma, Nutrition, Ag Chem segments.
  • Drive accountability for the selection and development of talent and succession within the organization to ensure an effective, sustainable model and talent pipeline.
  • Evaluate and ensure the organization has the competencies and structure required to implement the long-term strategy to ensure strong alignment between services and product offerings, market segments and customer-specific needs.
  • Partner with global R&D to drive product innovation and ensure appropriate portfolio.
  • Partner with global teams in Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Regulatory to ensure operational excellence.
  • Partner with Commercial Sales Leaders across North and South America, EMEA, and Asia Pacific regions to maximize profitability.
  • Collaborate and develop strong relationships with human resources, finance, and other center-led functions to ensure effective partnerships and alignment.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with major customers.
  • Position will be expected to actively engage the organization and travel locally, regionally and internationally as required to support the organization, collaborate with internal partners, and serve customers.
  • Ability to travel 25%+ both domestically and internationally


In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of the pharmaceutical ingredients landscape is required
  • Relevant knowledge of pharmaceutical excipients, ingredients, and related materials
  • Ability & desire to function at both strategic and tactical levels
  • Strong influencing capabilities, leadership accountability, and process discipline and rigor
  • Experience building and managing cross-functional teams and working collaboratively, cross-functionally, and globally
  • Strategic & analytical thinking skills, pleasant and engaging style, and executive presence


The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

  • An advanced degree, preferably an MBA, is preferred.
