Are you a passionate and experienced engineer looking to make a significant impact in the packaging industry? We are seeking a talented R&D Engineer - Thermoformed Packaging to join our dynamic team. This mid-level role reports directly to the R&D Director and is located in Hartsville, SC.

About The Role

As an R&D Engineer, you will be instrumental in developing, designing, and qualifying new thermoplastic materials and processes for our end-use markets. You will focus on identifying sustainable packaging solutions, managing key projects from development to commercialization, and driving growth opportunities to increase productivity, capacity, and efficiency across our manufacturing plants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the processing of plastic materials for consumer packaging.
  • Provide expertise and recommendations on manufacturing equipment needed to support business growth.
  • Address internal and external customer needs and packaging opportunities in a manufacturing setting.
  • Manage technical integration of projects through collaboration with internal cross-functional teams, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Originate new ideas to support the R&D product innovation and technology strategy.
  • Establish a motivating and engaging environment within the R&D organization.
  • Foster a positive, safe work environment through open communication and teamwork.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies and procedures to protect all employees.
  • Travel up to 30%, mostly domestic.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of related experience with a strong technical background in plastics manufacturing, processing (e.g., extrusion, thermoforming, and tooling); experience in consumer-based food packaging is a plus.
  • B.S./M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science.
  • Working knowledge of resins, additives, coatings, and laminates.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment with proven results leading capital projects and collaborating with OEMs and suppliers.
  • Results-driven with a high level of personal initiative, energy, and ownership for success.
  • Inquisitive mind, actively staying aware of new and developing technologies inside and outside of the industry.
  • Self-starter with a positive "can do" attitude and able to work independently.
  • Experience leading projects across different functions in the organization (e.g., commercial, manufacturing, supply management).
  • Strong technical capability and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated with a hands-on work ethic.

Compensation

  • The annual base salary range for this role is from $104,325.00 to $125,190.00 USD.
