R&D Chemist/Engineer

APL Engineered Materials, Inc. manufactures specialty inorganic solid chemicals for use in conventional lighting, radiation detection, energy-related and other niche applications. We have an exciting opportunity for an R&D Scientist or Engineer in Urbana, Illinois. The candidate will have a strong passion for developing new technologies or processes and help work towards scaling these processes.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Synthesis of materials by solid state, solution and other routes.
  • Be skillful in basic process design and design of experiments.
  • Build experimental systems and conduct basic commissioning and testing, as needed.
  • Assist with process development and scale-up efforts.
  • Participate in developing product costing, roadmaps and other commercial activities. Other tasks, as assigned.
  • Be well organized. Possess a safety mindset.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering or materials science. Engineers with extensive R&D chemistry experience are also strongly encouraged to apply. 1-4 years industrial experience is desired.
  • This is a hands-on position. Experience synthesizing inorganic materials is needed. Working with hazardous materials is a plus.
  • Experience with gas flow, vacuum systems and high-temperature furnaces.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to solve key problems independently or collaboratively.
  • Be able to lawfully work in the U.S. without the need for employment visa sponsorship.
