Property Accounting Controller

Our real estate client owns and operates a variety of apartment communities to suit every lifestyle. With properties in both the US and Canada, they are now seeking a new Property Accounting Controller for their corporate office in Bergen County, NJ.

Job Summary:

The Controller leads the Finance and Accounting functions, ensuring regulatory reporting, account reconciliation, journal entries, general ledger maintenance, month-end close, and payroll auditing. The role involves maintaining internal controls, attention to detail, and teamwork.

Essential Job Functions:

• Manage finance team, including audit, payroll, and financial operations.
• Establish and maintain accounting systems, procedures, and policies.
• Direct financial analysis, reporting, budgeting, and filings.
• Oversee accounting operations (Billing, A/R, A/P, GL management, banking).
• Ensure quality control over financial transactions and reporting.
• Audit payroll and process as needed.
• Coordinate and document auditing activities.
• Handle financial reporting and tax compliance.
• Support general ledger, journal entries, and financial statements.
• Review and reconcile balance sheets and P&L statements.
• Assist with audits, including 401K and Workers Compensation.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and GAAP.
• Develop and implement internal policies and controls.
• Review and code capital expenditures as fixed assets.
• Mentor and train finance team members.

Requirements:

• CPA preferred
• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required
• 10+ years of professional accounting experience
• Proficiency in accounting and office software (MRI, Kronos, ADP)
• Knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures
• Proficient in Excel and MS Word
