Political Outreach Director

The Political Outreach Director is responsible for the continued development, enhancement, and implementation of two key components of the AAOS political program: the AAOS Orthopaedic PAC and the Advisor’s Circle program. Handles all PAC compliance, fundraising, and OrthoPAC operational activities as assigned.

Manages Advisor’s Circle

• Under the direction of the Senior Director, manages all aspects in sustaining and growing our million-dollar soft dollar donation program. Works directly with current Advisor’s Circle members and works to identify and recruit future members. Manages Advisor’s Circle participation at political events, including retreats, in-district fundraisers, and convention, and at AAOS meetings, including the Annual Meeting, NOLC, and Fall Meeting. Takes minutes on the monthly/quarterly conference calls and creates Advisor’s Circle related presentations and webinars. Coordinates and attends shareholder meetings, sub-specialty Annual Meetings, and in-district political events associated with the Advisor’s Circle. Works with Senior Director, Political Affairs in planning Advisor’s Circle DC events, such as fly-ins and NOLC activities. Plans and attends the annual Advisor’s Circle business meeting.
  
  

Represents AAOS at political events.

• Attends political events and fundraisers on behalf of the Orthopaedic PAC. Interacts with members of Congress, their staff, fundraisers, and other industry lobbyists to engage and discuss orthopaedic policies and political issues.
  
  

Coordinates resident activities for OGR and the PAC.

• Works to increase resident involvement in the Orthopaedic PAC and AAOS advocacy activities, including the Resident Reception and deployment of the Future’s Capitol Club. Provides assistance with the development and execution of the PAC Resident Fellowship (established in 2015) to increase PAC outreach and education efforts to AAOS resident members. Plans and coordinates the PAC Resident Leadership Reception at Annual Meeting to increase resident PAC involvement. Collaborates with development staff in representing the OGR at all resident industry sponsored symposia.
  
  

Cultivates internal outreach and communications for current Orthopaedic PAC donors and prospects.

• Writes email solicitations and assists in mail and telephone solicitations. Works with PAC members to encourage peer-to-peer fundraising. Provides PAC updates for the Orthopaedic PAC Newsletter, AAOS Now, Advocacy Now, Advisor’s Circle, PAC Annual Report, and the AAOS Resident Newsletter.
  
  

Develops and deploys new hard dollar fundraising programs.

• Works with PAC team to develop, launch, and maintain new sources of funding for the PAC including big data, mobile fundraising, and the Rainmaker’s Program.
  
  

Coordinates all AAOS Political Events.

• Helps plan AAOS-hosted political fundraisers and check delivery events (62 in 2018). Works with Senior Director to promote events, confirm attendees, and strategically plan to maximize the impact they make to the beneficiary. Works with Senior Director, as well as DC and national fundraisers, to plan bundled DC and in-district fundraising events.
  
  

Assists staffing the PAC Executive Committee.

• Assists in staffing PAC Executive Committee as needed. Provides updates to Committee on political activity. Works with the PAC Executive Committee to plan and execute the Orthopaedic PAC’s Independent Expenditure program.
  
  

Works with Medical and Dental PACs (MaDPAC) to plan political workshops.

• Assists in planning and attending two political workshops: MaDPAC Forum and Candidate Workshop. Works with Senior Director and with other medical and dental PACs to coordinate and plan two multi-day industry workshops.

Qualifications

Required:

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree
• 3 to 4 years of government relations experience
• Experience with a PAC, preferably through two election cycles
• Skilled at networking and negotiating
• Knowledge of the legislative process and grassroots advocacy
• Experience managing multiple projects
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to convey concepts clearly and write effectively for each of various publication styles, including issue papers, web pages, newsletters, advocacy action alerts, fundraising appeals, year-end reports, event promotions, advertising copy and others
• Strong interpersonal, writing and oral communication skills
• Skilled at Word, Excel, PowerPoint

This hybrid position is based in Washington, DC and is open to applicants who are able to commute weekly to this office.
