The IU Indianapolis University Library seeks a part-time Access Services Assistant who will work alongside other Access Services Team members at University main Library's Service and Information desk, contributing to our mission to promote learning, provide information, and enable access to library resources for all our patrons.

This role offers the opportunity to develop skills in the areas of communication, problem solving and critical thinking, adaptability, and collaborative teamwork. The Access Services Assistant reports to the Access Services Managers.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Staffs the main Service and Information Desk along with other team members.
  • May contribute to projects that support other units in the library.
  • Provides outstanding customer service to all patrons whether in-person, via phone, e-mail, or chat.
  • Helps patrons with research tasks, including navigating the library catalogs and database searches.
  • Responds to a wide range of informational inquiries about the library and campus.
  • Helps patrons locate, check out, and return library materials.
  • Provides support coverage as needed for the Access Services team.
  • Works with full-time staff on projects to further the objectives of Access Services and University Library.
  • Assists faculty, students, and other patrons by answering phones and handling library-related issues, escalating complex issues to supervisor.
  • Monitors library systems. Creates and updates basic records, maintains automated records, reviewing for completeness and accuracy.
  • May assist with cataloguing new items, performing audits of outstanding items, and/or interlibrary loan materials.
  • May oversee library department desk and provide training and direction for student employees working the front desk.

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).

Preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Experience using the library and library resources to do research.

  • Ability to work with diverse clientele which includes university students and staff, as well as community visitors.
