About The Role
The Mechanical Engineering Manager plays a crucial role in developing Opentrons’ next generation products. This is a hands-on role while working with the team to develop revolutionary and best in class products, driving them from R&D to mass manufacturing. Projects will incorporate complex mechanisms, linear motion, thermal transfer and fluid dynamics. This role will report directly to the Director of Hardware. This is an exciting role for someone who is ready to revolutionize life sciences while working with a stellar team of engineers across the globe.

About The Role
The Mechanical Engineering Manager plays a crucial role in developing Opentrons’ next generation products. What You Will Do
- Manage the mechanical engineering team throughout the development of novel Opentrons robots and modules.
- Guide team through NPI [new product introduction] including coordination with supply chain, manufacturing and quality.
- Mentor team members through career planning, product development and mass manufacturing.
- Establish and improve team processes among design, prototyping, team reviews, testing methods and similar.
- Establish lean yet solid internal project management methodologies, inclusive of phase driven milestones, communication of key statuses, verification of goals and similar.
- Recruit and hire key personnel as needed for team growth.
- Constant collaboration with electrical, software, product, design and testing.
- This role may include trips to China to work alongside team members overseas.
Education
- Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in a mechanical engineering role.
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in a managerial role.
- Proven product development skills, having directly led and developed dozens of relevant complex electromechanical products from concept to market.
- Extensive proven leadership experience with relevant technical challenges and team members.
- Able to handle a large variety of projects simultaneously while maintaining effective prioritization and status communication.
- Strong experience with injection molding, die casting, sheet metal forming, CNC, and similar manufacturing processes. Having directly designed, troubleshooted and brought hundreds of parts to mass manufacturing.
- Strong experience and intuition with linear motion, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, electric motors and similar relevant domains.
- Strong experience working directly with manufacturers or contract manufacturers.
- Strong experience with DFMA, ECN processes, test reports, manufacturing/quality reports and similar.
- Strong proficiency with CAD and drafting (Solidworks preferred).
- Strong proficiency with ERP & lean document management systems.
- Familiarity with python, PCBA development, & debugging tools.
- Experience in life sciences or medical devices
- Design experience with CNC machines, 3D printers, pick-and-place machines or similar motion-dependent devices
- Experience with calculating or modeling stress-strain, fluid flow, and/or thermal systems
- Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
- Limited physical effort required
