The Role

At Graham and Parks, Instructional Aides provide general support for all students. When necessary, they are assigned to provide targeted support to specific students. Key responsibilities include:

  • The instructional aide will work closely with the classroom teachers to provide a nurturing environment that respects and honors the individual needs of all children, while also challenging them to meet high academic standards.
  • Assist the teacher in providing daily activities, which integrate learning across the curriculum.
  • Work with students individually and in small group activities.
  • Collaborate with the general education team, and related service staff as needed.
  • Help to create a positive and supportive environment throughout the school by supporting student behavior plans.
  • Supervise lunch and recess daily by circulating and actively monitoring students
  • Other duties include attending meetings; accompanying children on field trips; make and prepare instructional materials; assist in specials as needed; manage the whole class as needed; perform other tasks requested by the teacher.
  • Participate in parent conferences with the classroom teacher as needed.
  • Toileting of students is a duty that an individual may be expected and required to perform as a paraprofessional employed by the Cambridge Public Schools.

Your Skill Set

As the incoming Instructional Aide, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Above average skills in collaboration
  • Excellent skills in oral communication
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve
  • Experience working with students in urban environments
  • Must be patient, and flexible
  • Computer literacy including email, Google Docs, etc.
  • Willingness to be trained in de-escalation and safe physical restraint techniques
  • Must have the physical ability to work on the floor and move around the room to support students and teachers in curriculum implementation, use of manipulatives and other instructional methods and materials
  • Associates degree, or 48 college credits from an accredited college or university
