HOMELESS LIAISON

Summary Description

Under the general supervision of the Intervention Director, this position serves as district liaison to all the WCSD schools and performs the duties to assure that all WCSD children experiencing homelessness will be provided opportunities to achieve the same high-quality academic standards expected of all children, by eliminating barriers to their education. This position will meet the goals of the Children in Transition Program as outlined in the plan for serving Children in Transition and perform the related work duties as required.

Exemplary Duties/Responsibilities

Identifies students as Children in Transition (CIT), provides materials and support services to school advocates, participates in providing staff training, and support services to WCSD schools in the following areas: communicating with the schools/community to create awareness of issues and educational barriers; collaborating with school and community agencies to identify children and youth experiencing homelessness; collaborating with schools to facilitate school enrollment; providing transportation in a timely manner; coordination of services to meet the special needs of children experiencing homelessness; and guidance in developing and implementing strategies that encourage socialization and success within a caring school environment.

Provides schools, resource centers, community agencies and parents with current information regarding homelessness and provides professional development regarding the McKinney-Vento Act to WCSD school staff. Maintains records, and prepares reports as required by state and federal grants, WCSD and the State of Nevada.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  • An Associate Degree or class credits in an educational or social work field or human services field;

OR

  • Two (2) or more years of experience in a school or community agency working with homeless or at-risk families.

Knowledge of: Issues surrounding homelessness, community resources and services, procedures for identifying students and families who may need services and program development, specifically for Children in Transition.

Skilled at: Planning, problem solving, coordinating activities, analyzing situations accurately and taking appropriate action; communicating effectively with a wide range of people, including transitional families, school personnel and community agencies; interpreting and explaining district policies and procedures as they relate to the position; making group presentations relating to homeless issues; and recognizing and showing sensitivity, respect and appreciation for different cultures and living situations.

Special Considerations: Must be willing and able to work a varied schedule.

Grade 20 FY25

Sch A: $19.62 (entry step)

Sch B: $23.26 (entry step)

New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position. Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.

This is a 40 hour a week, One Year Only position ending June 2025. This position is grant-funded and contingent upon continued funding. If funding continues, the hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the grant without re-advertising.

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
