We are seeking a Field Research Engineer who will play an integral, hands-on role in designing, preparing, installing, monitoring, and troubleshooting measurement systems used in buildings-related field research. Our ideal Field Research Engineer has experience conducting research, field assessments, and/or analysis of building energy systems. You will work with teams across multiple projects to enable field data collection in support of the evaluation of a wide range of energy efficiency and electrification technologies.. You are curious about how buildings and mechanical systems work and want to creatively and equitably address climate change using your technical skills. You thrive in a collegial and collaborative environment with a diverse group of researchers and partners.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds. This position will be located in Madison, WI, and require up to 25% travel.

What you’ll do:

  • Select, prepare, install, monitor and troubleshoot field research equipment in homes and commercial buildings. Be hands on with the field equipment process.
  • Set up and monitor network and communications devices for remote, online data collection
  • Assist with basic data processing and analytics
  • Conduct primary and secondary research related to energy and sustainability in buildings
  • Assist with communicating results in written, graphical, and presentation formats
  • Lead and support administrative tasks associated with the field research equipment process, such as ordering equipment, documenting available sensors, etc.

What you’ll need:

  • Scientific, technical, or engineering background strongly preferred
  • Hands on experience with mechanical and electrical tools and a strong desire to tinker and problem solve.
  • Experience with eGauge, Hobo, Campbell Scientific, or similar data acquisition equipment a plus.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn wireless and internet communications for remote

data access and transfer.

General knowledge of building construction and mechanical (heating/cooling) systems.

  • Fundamental knowledge of energy concepts.
  • Ability to travel and work independently or collaboratively at field sites.
  • Data analytics and/or programming experience. Experience with an analytics package like R,

SAS, Stata, Matlab, or Python a plus.

  • Proficiency in MS software, especially Excel but including Word and Outlook.
